Declining sex ratio in J&K grave concern for society: Shamima

SRINAGAR, Jun 1: Decreasing female sex ratio in J&K is grave concern for the society and the government is committed to reverse the trend.
This was stated by Chairperson State Commission for Women, Shamima Firdous during a meeting here today. Director Health, Dr Saleem, Secretary, J&K State Commission for Women, Hafiza, Medical Superintendents of Kupwara, Baramulla and Gousia Hospital Srinagar and other senior officers and experts attended.
Meeting discussed the ramifications of the trend on the society and it was decided that awareness programmes would be held to apprise people about the disastrous impact of declining sex ratio besides ensuring strict implementation of PNDT Act. Religious/political leaders will also be approached to propagate message through various modes of publicity campaign for eradicating the menace.
Meeting of the Divisional Advisory Committee on Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PNDT) Act was held here today under the chairmanship of Director Health Services (DHS) Jammu Dr. Ashok Sharma. Committee has been constituted to advise suggestions and recommendations for better implementation of the Act. It will keep a close watch on the functioning of ultrasound clinics and genetic centres to discourage the pre-natal determination of sex. PNDT Act has been formulated after taking a serious view of the onslaught of the sex-selective discriminatory practices by the medical fraternity.
Committee unanimously decided that all ultrasound clinics will be provided with list of Divisional Advisory Committee members who can visit any clinic at any time for inspection and record shortfalls for presentation to appropriate authority. Director Health Services has been designated as appropriate authority for implementation of PNDT Act.
Committee also decided that it shall hold periodical meetings and clear the pending registration cases of the ultrasound clinics with in a specified time frame under the Act. The Committee members who attended the meeting were Dr. N.K.Pargal, Suram Sharma, Dr. Subash Gupta, Col. K. S. Sambyal, Dr. Manjula Sharma, Dr. Ashwani Jojra of Sahyog India (Member) and CMO Jammu, Dr. Baldev Sharma. Committee also decided to conduct on the spot inspection of the Ultra Sound Clinics to check weather these are functioning as per the guidelines of the Act.
