With changing names of historical places Kashmir fast losing its pluralistic character | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 1: Kashmir is fast losing its pluralistic and composite culture courtesy successive state governments which during last over 21 years of turmoil instead of working for strengthening the secular and national forces in the Valley made such polices and programme which were aimed at pleasing the separatist forces and fundamentalist elements in Valley. Notwithstanding the claims of the State government to take the displaced Pandits back to their homes and hearths in Kashmir to restore the age old pluralism of Valley, the Government is leaving no stone unturned in pleasing the separatists and fundamentalist elements in the Valley. And much to the discomfiture of the nationalist forces in the state the Government is itself implementing their agenda. According to sources this all is being done to keep the separatists in good humor despite the fact that that such a policy of the State government has drawn wide spread opposition from the people of other communities in the state, sources added. Sources said to convert Kashmir into a total Islamic state the minority Hindus under a hatched conspiracy by the fundamentalist and separatist elements were forced to flee from Valley in 1989-90 and this was followed by forcible grabbing of their land and other property by anti-national elements. These forces who had full backing of the Government have even succeeded in managing the mutation of revenue records in league with some officers in the Revenue Department to transfer the properties of minority Hindus on their name, sources said, adding though the matter was taken with the concerned authorities by the representatives of the displaced Pandits from time to time they failed to restore this land and set the records right. Sources said not only the land of Hindus has been forcibly grabbed in various parts of Kashmir but that of their religious places has also been grabbed at various places by the vested elements in league with the Government agencies. The Government has not only been a silent spectator to this but it's different agencies also occupied the land of Hindu religious places including the cremation grounds etc for construction of school buildings, dispensaries and other government offices. The Government did not stop here but to appease the fundamental forces and separatists it under a well definnied policy and programme is working to fulfill their unfinished agenda, sources said, adding the first task taken up in hand by the State Government in this regard is that it under a well defined policies has started changing the names of historical cities, towns, hill locks and other places in Kashmir to omit all the remaining symbols of Hindu civilization in Valley. Sources said changing the name of Srinagar city to Shehar-e-Khas by the authorities in Srinagar is a part of this policy and programme of State Government which will go to any extent in pleasing the separatists and fundamentalist elements in Kashmir. If Government is to work on such an agenda then it should not claim to take the displaced Pandits back to Valley as the Government itself was working against the basic principles of pluralism and composite culture, said Vir Saraf of RIK. He said Srinagar has been named after the Shri Yantra that was engraved on a huge rock at historical shrine of Chakreshwar whose history dates back to Satisar period when entire Kashmir was a huge lake. And this way the Srinagar has a historical background, he added. He said by naming it Shehar-e-Khas the Government wants to delink it from the Hindu period and history. Likewise the hilly lock of Shankaracharya named after this great saint who established a temple over there in eleventh century has also a historical significance and changing it by Thaakt-e-suliman and the hill lock of Hari Parbhat as Kohi-e-Maran is aimed at islamisation of Valley. Saraf said Anantnag which is also having a historical background is being called as Islamabad by the majority community in the Valley in their bid to Islamise every thing in Kashmir. Terming it a serious issue he said for the strengthening of secular values in Kashmir the Government has to refrain from appeasing the separatists and bowing to their wishes. |
