Summer agitation left 5384 Cops wounded
258 detained under PSA, 85 released

JAMMU, June 1: At least 2500 CRPF personnel and 2844 policemen sustained injuries since March 2010 to May 31, 2011. This was disclosed by a police spokesman in the summer capital this evening.
The spokesman sources said around 5000 persons including separatists, political workers and stone pelters were taken into custody during he said period. Two hundred and fifty eight (258) were detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) by different District Magistrates. However, 83 have been released till date", he said.
The spokesman made clear that the persons detained under PSA include drug peddlers and timber smugglers as well.
Giving details the spokesman said that 709 incidents of stone pelting were reported during the above mentioned period. "One hundred and sixty (160) incidents of arson also took place across Kashmir", he said.
The miscreants, according to the spokesman, destroyed 206 government buildings and 73 vehicles. "Six security installations were torched and later razed to the ground", sources said.
The spokesman surprisingly did not make a mention of the civilian deaths that took place during the agitation.
Pertinent to mention, the agitation left at least 117 persons dead and a scores wounded. The entire valley remained closed for more than 140 days. The agitation was triggered by killing of three civilians in a fake encounter at Machil sector in Kupwara district.
