Govt to improve water supply through machine drilled pump wells | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, June 2: In a bid to tackle acute and growing shortage of drinking wanter in various parts of the state the ground water division of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department has decided to install hand pumps and machine drilled pump wells not only in the urban and rural areas but also in the mountainous terrains, foothills and non-motorable areas. Official sources said that under the plan construction of 125 mm machine drilled pump wells was being expedited for meeting acute water shortage. The sources said that for the purpose of constructing machine drilled pump wells the experts were using dozer or crawler mounted rig units in various areas of the state. Official report s said that during the last five years the demand for drinking water in the urban areas of the state, including the two capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar had doubled when the increase in drinking water supply has not been more than 35 per cent during the same period. These reports said that in several urban areas, including the two cities of Srinagar and Jammu besides various towns the drinking water supply shortage had been the result of acute power shortage. Since the PHE has to depend on lifting of water for the filtration plants the process needs uninterrupted supply of electricity. Official sources said that the PHE Minister, Taj Mohiuddin, has taken up the matter with the Minister for power who has promised to look into the matter so that for water plants electricity was supplied through special power lines. The sources said that the pace of construction of machine drilled hand pump wells had been slow because there has been no response to the Government bids for supply of requisite machinery for the project. Sources said that the Government had to renew its bids and extend the date for submission and receipt of tenders. PHE functionaries said that since the level of underground water in the state had shown downward curve it was not possible for the department to set up major drinking water supply schemes. Under the plans the capacity of the existing water supply plants was to be increased. And it has been decided to assist civic bodies and panchayat committees in installing hand pumps and machine drilled hand pump wells in both urban and rural areas in the state. |
