Governor for modernizing tourist infrastructure to meet emerging requirements | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, JUNE 2 – The Governor, N. N. Vohra, today emphasized the need for progressively expanding and modernizing tourist infrastructure, keeping in view the area specific requirements and potential for the promotion of tourism sector in the State as it has enormous scope for generating economic activity and employment avenues. The Governor was interacting with a delegation of the J&K Tourism Alliance which called on him at the Raj Bhavan here this evening. The Governor observed that there is a need to draw up imaginative, short and long term plans for the promotion of tourism. In this context it would be necessary to develop adequate wayside facilities, eating places, public conveniences, areas for pitching tents, parking vehicles etc, and, at the same time, ensuring that all these facilities are designed to be in harmony with the natural surroundings and ecology of the area. The Governor suggested that an apex State level organization of the travel trade and hospitality industry needs to come up in J&K for strategizing and delivering the tourism potential. He said that there is also a need for working out attractive packages for achieving the dispersal of a significant percentage of the pilgrims visiting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and the Holy Cave Shrine of Shri Amarnathji to various tourist destinations in Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu regions. This, he said, could be achieved if all concerned agencies associated with the travel trade in J&K work in coordination. Referring to the demand relating to the operation of International chartered flights put forth by the delegation in their Memorandum presented to him, the Governor assured that he will discuss the matter with the State Tourism Minister and also address the Union Ministers of Tourism and Civil Aviation. The delegation complimented the Governor, who is also the Chairman of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, for taking a number of initiatives for smooth conduct of these pilgrimages and progressively improving the facilities for the visiting Yatris. They added that all these steps have contributed significantly in promotion of pilgrim tourism in the State. They also thanked the Governor for allotting quota of helicopter bookings to the local Tour and Travel Operators and the Hospitality Industry of the State with a view to extending economic benefits of the Yatra to them. The Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mr. R. K. Goyal was present on the occasion.
