Eroding Congress Constituency In Jammu | JAMMU CENTRAL UNIVERSITY | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 2: The Dogras of Jammu are not demanding something special. They are simply demanding what was promised to them months ago. They are simply asking the Union Government to set up the sanctioned Central University in Jammu so that the Jammu youth, like the Kashmiri youth, avail of the additional educational facilities and compete with others. The Jammu Province People's Forum (JPPF) has been putting forth this demand since months. The Jammu Central University Morcha is expressing similar views. The Panthers Party, too, has urged New Delhi to fulfill the promise. The youth of Samba district have organized a number of protest demonstrations on the issue. The Jammu University Research Scholars Association has also held a number of demonstrations. The fact of the matter is that every Dogra is feeling agitated over the indifferent attitude of the concerned authorities towards their very genuine demand. It was expected that the Jammu-based Congress ministers and legislators would take cognizance of the genuine demand of the Dogras and persuade the concerned authorities in New Delhi to establish the university. But it has not happened. The ministers are busy cultivating the ruling National Conference to remain in the good books of the Chief Minister. The Congress legislators have thought it prudent to keep their mouth shut. They have not uttered a single word on the issue that has been agitating the minds of the neglected Dogras. The Congress leadership, too, has been maintaining a silence on the issue. The indifferent attitude of the Congress party, the Congress ministers and the Congress legislators has simply added to the anger of the Dogras. The grouse of the Dogras is that the Congress ministers and legislators have abandoned them and they, instead of catering to the needs of their Jammu constituency, which constitutes the Congress' strong and stable support-base in the state, have been simply supporting the anti-Dogra policies being devised and implemented by the National Conference. Their grouse just cannot be dismissed as something silly and preposterous. They do make a point when they take on and criticize the Congress, the Congress ministers and the Congress legislators. Time is running and running very fast. There are reasons to believe that the agitating Dogras would abandon the Congress the way the Congress has abandoned them. The truth is that the Dogras are turning against the Congress. Another truth is that the Congress itself is eroding its support-base in the land of the Dogras. The Congress can reverse the trend and cultivate or win back the trust of the estranged Dogras and they can do so provided they are willing to make common cause with them. The Congress can reverse the trend and retain control over its Jammu constituency because it is in power both at the Center and in the state and it can deliver. The ball is in the court of the Congress. As for the Dogras, they are waiting for an opportune moment to strike and avenge their humiliations. |
