Digitization of ‘archives record’ hits roadblock

JAMMU, June 3: The State Government's plan on digitization of the records in the Directorate of Archives and Archaeology and in the Department of Revenue has made no progress.
Official sources said that as far as the programme was digitization of records in the Department of Archives was concerned there was no response to the tenders that had been floated for inviting bids for carrying out the digitization process.
Sources said that several thousand rupees had been spent on newspaper advertisements for inviting for tenders for digitization of the records but there was no response from the concerned companies.
The Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums has again advertised tender notices in the newspapers after extending the dates for receipt of the tenders and their opening.
The exercise on digitization of the records in the Department was archives has been initiated so ensure safety of old records, comprising sever all thousand manuscripts, newspaper clippings, old magazines and some r are books.
The Department does not want to allow these records to get destroyed and for ensuring that the material was available for the future generations to go through it was being saved by getting it digitized.
Sources said that as far as the digitization of revenue records was concerned the delay was the result of Government's interest in adopting latest technology involved in the programme. In this connection a team from the revenue Department has been sent to Delhi to seek guidance from the experts.
Senior functionaries of the Revenue Department had shown keen interest in completing the construction and renovation of the Patwar Khanas in the state. These Patwarkhanas had become as good has dilapidated sheds in which even the revenue records were not safe. They said that most of the Patwar khanas had been built and the digitization of the records was expected to be started shortly.
