Omar stresses on conservation of water bodies Chairs 3rd meeting of WMDA

SRINAGAR, June 3:

Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Friday laid thrust on conservation of lakes and water bodies underlining their significance in bio-diversity and economic spheres of the State. He said the essentiality of water bodies in the ecological spectrum and natural beauty of Jammu and Kashmir is imperative and vital.
“To sustain State’s tourism and safeguard economic resources the conservation of water bodies, forest wealth and bio-diversity of State is the need of the hour”, he emphasized.
Chairing the 3rd meeting of Wullar- Manasbal Development Authority (WMDA) of which he is the Chairperson also, Omar Abdullah highlighted the need for unified and coordinated efforts by the administration and general public to preserve State’s fragile environment and conserve its natural beauty.
Chief Minister pinpointed the significance of Wullar and Manasbal lakes and asked the WMDA to take measures for protection and beautification of these lakes. “Initiate holistic programme to restore the glory of these lakes of great heritage value. And make them attractive for international tourism”, he added.
The Chief Minister constituted a Committee under the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister to settle the issues regarding the selection of alternate site for quarrying in Manasbal area. He fixed 15 days period for completing the task. He also directed for encouraging the adventure tourism in the area, and fast tracking work on sewerage treatment plant.
In a PowerPoint presentation, the Chief Executive Officer, WMDA gave details of the action taken on the decisions of previous meeting and gave brief about the performance and achievements registered by the Authority during the last year. He said that out of 36 works taken in hand by the WMDA for beautification and protection of twin lakes, 30 have been fully completed and three are in last stages of completion. An amount of Rs. 3 crores have been spent on these works during last year.
The officers of Forest Department also made a presentation about the Management Action Plan for Wullar lake.
