Sarpanchs, Panchs vow to work for green environs

JAMMU, Jun 3- Nearly 145 newly elected Panchs and Sarpanchs besides prominent citizens of Majalta block in Udhampur district today vowed to work for their shared concern of environment conservation and to make their villages green and pollutant free.
“We will not allow human greed to create havoc with our green environs, as we owe to our posterity best planet to live in”, the representatives of the democratic institutions at the grass-roots level pledged at a day-long function organized by the nationally acclaimed Centre of Environment Education (CEE) in collaboration with the Destitute and Handicapped Welfare Association (DAHWA), WWF-India, J&K Chapter in connection with the World Environment Day at Khoon village on Friday.
The event brought together the Panchs and Sarpanchs after getting elected to the local self government. They had an exhaustive interaction with the environmental experts and campaigners in the field.
A well known environmentalist and former Chairman, Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Board, Dr C M Seth highlighted the importance of the safe ecology for the sustenance of the mankind and said the Panchayats can play a vital role in conserving and preserving the environment.
Dr Seth, who is also the Chairman of WWF India, J&K Chapter, expressed concern over environmental degradation and said that if corrective measures were not taken on war footing the future of generation would be in jeopardy.
The Programme Cordinator, CEE, Ms Rashmi Gangwar dwelt on the initiatives taken under Paryavaran Mitra campaign all over the country for generating awareness among the people about the need of saving the environment. She acknowledged with appreciation the participation of the youth of the state in this endeavour and said that the people in Jammu and Kashmir are conscious about their responsibilites towards environmental preservation. “Paryavaran Mitra” is the biggest ever environment project which is being implemented in close synergy with the Arcelor Mittal and Union Ministry of Environment & Forests.
Ms Gangwar dwelt on the initiatives taken in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions for making the campaign a success and said that students have been enrolled as Paryavaran Mitra, who will fan out in their respective areas for educating the people about environmental hazards and corrective measures to be taken for maintaining ecological balance.
