Early Times Report
Jammu, June 3: Undeterred by the restrictions imposed on his movement by Omar Abdullah led coalition government, the Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani today made clear that he was determined to reach the outside world.
Addressing a crowded press conference at his Hyderpora residence where he was place under `house arrest', Geelani released a booklet urging tourists, foreign nationals and Amarnathji Yatries to act as ambassadors of Kashmir.
The booklet has been published in Urdu, Hindi and English. The booklet gives a brief history of Kashmir and also makes a mention of New Delhi's promises to people of the state. It also makes a mention of what Geelani calls state sponsored repression and suppression.
The booklet blames the government for last year's summer agitation which left more than 117 persons dead and around 5000 policemen wounded. "Three innocent civilians were killed in a fake encounter in Machil sector of Kupwara district by the army and the police. This triggered the agitation."
Welcoming the tourists in Kashmir, Geelani said the tourists being human beings are our brothers. "Please give tongue to our woes", he appealed.
The Hurriyat chairman urged the people to treat the tourists and Yatries well. "They are our guests. The traders must sell genuine goods to them. No attempt should be made to cheat the guests", he said.
"Some unscrupulous traders have been selling fake saffron and shawls to the tourists. This is highly unfortunate. Such elements are enemies of Kashmir", he said.
Geelani also appealed to the people to maintain communal harmony. "We are peace loving people. Our struggle is not against any person or religion", he made clear.
The booklet, according to people close to Hurriyat (G) has made a passionate appeal to the tourists. "It will be very difficult for the tourists to ignore it", they said.
