Rashida's body still untraced | Humiliated after police labelled her "characterless", she had jumped into Chenab river | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 3: Humiliated after she was labelled "characterless" by police, Rashida Bano -- a B Ed student -- jumped into Chenab river at Pul-Doda on May 29 last. The body was still untraced. With this, she became the third girl in the erstwhile Doda district who preferred death to insult at the hands of police.Their crime: All the three were found spending leisure time with their male classmates. On July 13 last year, 12th class students -- Sapna and Sangeeta -- were detained by Atholi police at Kishtwar as they were found "laughing and exchanging pleasantries" with their classmate Pradeep Kumar alias Ramu on the Chenab bank at Atholi. It was a simple friendly talk and they had not indulged in any obscenity. It were, however, the cops who were alleged to have shouted obscenities at them. After they were freed, they had walked straightway towards the river and jumped into it, unable to bear with the insult at the hands of police. Had the perpetrators of the July 13 incident been given "examplary" punishment, its May 29 repeat could have been avoided. Rashida too met her end under the circumstances Sapna and Sangeeta had. The Atholi incident would complete one year next month, but the girls' bodies were still untraced. There was no clue to the whereabouts of the Rashida's body too despite the week-long relentless searches by her family, relatives and police. SP, Doda, Mohammad Arif Rishu said though their efforts were on to find out the girl's body, the heavy flow of water in the river was a great hurdle in their way. Rashida was on May 29 sipping tea in a roadside dhaba at Pul-Doda with her classmate when some SPOs came there and teased her. Later, they allegedly beat up the boy in full public view for "spoiling the atmosphere" of the small Pul-Doda town. Later, when they attempted to drag both of them to the Pul-Doda police post, the girl ran towards the nearby Chenab river and jumped into it. She was given no chance to speak to her parents. Everything happened fast and before help could reach her, her body was washed away by the strong river currents. The boy had completed his B Ed course last year while the girl was to appear in the exams this year. She was so dejected and depressed after the unwarranted police action that she preferred to die than facing her parents. A visit to a police station by women for their questioning is a taboo in the Indian society. Who is to be held responsible for her death and for the death of Sapna and Sangeeta? Obviously police. Will inquiry reports of IGP Dilbagh Singh and divisional commissioner Pawan Kotwal in this regard exonerate police, or fix responsibility on them for Rashida's "murder"? This remains to be seen. |
