Amarnath Yatra arrangements discussed

UDHAMPUR, JUNE 4 –The District Development Commissioner, Mr. Baseer Ahmed Khan today convened a meeting of District Officers of various departments and owners of private banquet halls to discuss the measures for making available adequate arrangements for the comfortable stay of Amarnath Yatris at Udhampur town and its outskirts on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in the event of bad weather or blockade of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway during yatra days,
Senior Superintendent of Police, Udhampur, Mr. Surinder Gupta, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mr. Rajinder, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Education Officer, Executive Engineers of PWD, PHE, Assistant Director, CA&PD, ARTO Udhampur, Tehsildars, other officers, prominent citizens and Banquet hall owners attended the meeting.
Threadbare discussion on various arrangements related to the stay of pilgrims in the town and from Tikri to Patnitop were held.
Provision for drinking water, power supply, Medicare, sanitation, construction of temporary toilets, transport, traffic regulation, security and accommodation came under the discussion in the meeting.
The meeting observed that in the event of bad weather or blockade of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway during yatra days, there was every possibility that pilgrims might have to stay in Udhampur for which the arrangements to accommodate them would be jointly made by the district administration, NGOs and banquet hall owners of the town. The meeting also identified the places of possible stay in educational institutions and private banquet halls.
The DDC after enquiring from the Banquet hall owners and Chief Education Officer regarding space in their halls and educational institutions, directed the officers of Municipality, PHE, PDD, PWD to ensure fool-proof arrangements of sanitation, drinking water and power supply and construction of temporary toilets well in advance wherever needed. He also asked the Executive Officer Municipal Council, Udhampur to ensure cleanliness of the town daily. He also asked the District Police and Traffic Police to ensure security and traffic regulation during yatra days.
The Civil Defence Organization, Udhampur would keep the services of 40 Civil Defence volunteers at the disposal of SSP, Udhampur for the smooth conduct of the yatra, the meeting decided.
Speaking on the occasion, the DDC said that a control room is being set up in the town which would function round the clock for assistance of Amarnath pilgrims. The Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) has been designated as Nodal Officer to oversee yatra arrangements. The DDC also constituted a team to check the rates and quality of food at the hotels and restaurants enroute Tikri to Patnitop. The team would comprise Tehsildar Udhampur, Assistant Controller Legal Metrology, AD CA&PD,SHO Udhampur and Food Inspector.
