Div Com flags off truck loads of locally developed paddy seed to Karnataka

JAMMU, JUNE 04 - Divisional Commissioner Jammu Dr. Pawan Kotwal today flagged off a consignment of 90 Qtls. of improved quality Foundation Seed of Paddy (Jaya variety) to Karnataka state on their request. The seed has been produced by the Department of Agriculture, Jammu at the Seed Multiplication Farm, Chinore.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Pawan Kotwal appreciated the department of Agriculture, Jammu for developing the capability to export quality seed of Paddy for the first time from the State. He said that it was a landmark achievement in the development of Agriculture Sector in the State.
Speaking on the occasion, Director Agriculture Jammu, Mr. Ajay Khajuria, disclosed that the achievement was an outcome of the hard work of Agriculture department put in to make its Seed Multiplication Farms viable and as such production trends at these Farms are on rise thus creating a surplus for which new avenues for marketing of seeds had been explored. He also commended the fact that the department could produce surplus seed of the said variety for export after meeting the requirement of this kind of seed in whole of Jammu Division for Kharif 2011 season.
He stated that the department had geared up for production and distribution of Basmati-370 variety seed of paddy under Basmati Project at the Seed Multiplication Farms and through the Seed Village Programme and adequate Basmati 370 seed will made available from Kharif 2012 for which the arrangements of Breeder Seed/Foundation Seed from SKUAST/ICAR has already been tied up. In the current Kharif (2011), the Basmati seed supply is also being supplemented with some other high yielding varieties of paddy including hybrid varieties.
Earlier, while giving the technical details Mr. V.K.Bhakri, Joint Director of Agriculture (Inputs), Jammu stated that the high yielding variety seeds and hybrids were introduced at a larger scale during the last Kharif and Rabi seasons. In order to meet the requirement of farmers for Kharif 2011 season, 600 qtls of Hybrid Rice had been introduced besides more than 7000 Qtls. of Hybrid Maize seed has been procured by the deptt. for supply to the farmers which is nearly double the quantity of Hybrid seeds supplied to the farmers last year.
Some of the world renowned high yielding varieties of maize are also being supplied to the farmers this year. In the area of early sowing, Maize seed has already been supplied to the farmers through the seed stores of the department, he briefed.

O S Chowdhary Farm Manager Chinore, S. A S Reen Store Officer & others.
