SPCB sets up E-waste collection bin | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, JUNE 04- The State pollution Control Board(SPCB) today established a E-waste collection bin at its office complex, Narwal, Jammu as a part of its campaign for creating awareness about the hazards of E-waste. Regional Director, State Pollution Control Board Jammu, Mr. Showkat Choudhary inaugurated the bin today to mark the Environment Day. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Choudhary said that E-waste collection bins will be installed at various places across Jammu region from where the authorized recyclers would collect the E-waste for recycling. It is time to take up systematic disposal of E-waste to ensure elimination of danger to the environment. He described the move as a “humble beginning that would help in minimizing the hazards of E-waste”. The need for creating E-waste disposal facilities was felt because mixing of such waste into garbage results in the E-waste finding its way to landfill and leading to leaching of heavy metals and radio active substances that may causes ground water contamination. Moreover manual handling of E-waste items such as cathode ray tubes, computer monitors, mobile phones etc. lead to loss of precious metals. NO:PR/DI/J/1636/desk/pps// |
