Government’s plan to develop new tourist resorts makes no headway | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 4: The state Government's plan to develop new tourist circuits and resorts for the excursionists to Jammu and Kashmir has not made any headway. The result is that while tourists to Kashmir have to content themselves with their visit to Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg, those in Jammu get engaged in visiting temples besides Mansar and Surinsar lakes. Even if some make it to the Patnitop and Sudh Mahadev their number if quite small when compared to the number of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Mata Vaishnov Devi shrine. Experts are of the opinion that if the state Government develops new tourist circuits and resorts a major portion of the pilgrim traffic to Vaishno Devi could be diverted to these resorts that could generate more jobs and income to those connected with tourism industry. Even the two lakes, Mansar and Surinsar, have not witnessed any major up-gradation and development. These lakes call for up-gradation of the roads that link them with Jammu city. There is also need for constructing shelter sheds, huts and hotels in the area so that to visiting these lakes extend their stay. Similarly despite its commitments and pronouncements, has not been able to develop new tourist circuits in the Kashmir valley. Reports said that a senior bureaucrat, Mir Naseem Ahmed, had submitted a report to the Government over two decades ago for the development of the tourist circuit in Kashmir. Till date no action has been taken the report which had envisaged integrated development of all potential resorts by activating peripheral circuit starting from Qazigund and after going around the valley it will rejoin on the national highway at the same place. Once the circuit will be functional tourists would get an opportunity to visit places like Achabal, Yusmarg, Dodapathar, Watlab an Mansbal. Even the Government's plan to develop Bungus valley and other scenic spots in north Kashmir has made no headway. Reports said that two factors have come in the way of development anew tourist resorts. One being the militancy related violence which has not allowed the concerned Government agencies to initiate measures for developing infrastructure at new resorts. Secondly, paucity of resources too has delayed implementation of the plan which requires several hundred crores of rupees for developing just a couple of new resorts.(KIP)
