EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 04 – Reiterating the resolve of the government to strengthen grass root democracy in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Tara Chand today said aim of Panchayati Raj Institutions is to empower people and to address the development needs of far flung and rural areas of the state.
He said holding of Panchayat elections is a land mark step and the establishment of these grass root level institutions would go a long way in addressing the area specific problems of the people.
Tara Chand was addressing a gathering of newly elected Panches and Sarpanches of Sarmala, Kot Maira, Dori and Dager Panchayats who called on him here today.
While congratulating the newly elected Panches and Sarpanches, the Deputy Chief Minister said people participated in the Panchayat elections braving all odds and now the elected members should come up to the expectations of the people. He said that the elected public representatives should devote their full attention to reach out to the people and further the development process.
Mr. Tara Chand said that the government is determined to empower the grass root level democratic institutions and ongoing Panchayati elections is a giant leap forward in that direction, adding that the focus is to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system and promote area specific development.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that ultimate aim of establishment of these grass root level institutions was to enable the people to take decisions on their own and ensure need based development of their respective areas . He said the Panchayats would also help to keep a tab on the pilferage of funds and curb the menace of corruption.
Later, a large number of deputations hailing from various areas of Jammu region called on the Deputy Chief Minister and projected their demands for an early redressal.
Mr. Tara Chand gave a patient hearing and assured them that all their genuine demands would be addressed at the earliest.
