EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, June 4: Jammu police has included four junior officers in the high profile five member special investigation team (SIT) probing infamous Chopra murder case.
The move comes at a time when the team had been repeatedly claiming of having zeroed in on the culprits. More importantly, the four junior officers who have been made part of the SIT include Inspector Sunil Singh Jasrotia, Sub-Inspector Daulat Khan, Sub-Inspector Altaf Hussain Shah and Assistant Sub Inspector Lal Chand.
Of these four junior officers, Sub-Inspector Daulat Khan who lost the confidence of IG (Jammu-Poonch) Dilbag Singh following barrage of complaints against him was recently transferred and posted in Rajouri-Poonch range. Khan was incharge police post Greater Kailash before he was shifted by IG. However, this new order bought Khan back into the limelight and even ensured that he remains stationed in Jammu.
Sources said that the second junior officer, controversial Inspector Sunil Singh Jasrotia, who is facing murder trial, was few days ago transferred and posted as SHO Trikuta Nagar. Since the area where heinous crime took place falls under his jurisdiction, police department might have justification for including him in SIT. Third new member, Assistant Sub-Inspector Lal Chand, presently in Pir Mitha police station, is on the verge of superannuation.
The only non-controversial man who has been made part of the SIT is Sub-Inspector Altaf Hussain, presently posted as Investigating Officer (IO) in Trikuta Nagar police station. Sources said that one of these four officers has been made part of the SIT against the order issued by IG office. They stressed that the shuffle has not been done in consultation with the IG of Jammu-Poonch range.
Before the inclusion of these four junior officers, SIT headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Jammu-Kathua range Farooq Khan included SSP Jammu Basant Kumar Rath, SP (Counter Intelligence) Romesh Kumar Angral, SP (Armed) Mahadeep Singh and DySP CID (CI) Jammu Muzaffar Hussain Shah. This SIT was constituted by Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda.
It needs to be reiterated that Puneet Chopra, son of Rajinder Bhushan alias Raju Chopra, had filed an LPA for transfer of the case to CBI but he withdrew it recently after the newly constituted SIT headed by DIG Farooq Khan began the investigations. The newly constituted SIT grilled Ajab Singh alongwith his business partners and names of businessmen, contractors and relatives of a sitting minister and a legislator had surfaced during the initial investigations.
It needs to be further stressed that Raju Chopra, his wife Madhu, daughter Saloni, servant Sonu and driver Jagan Nath were all murdered at their residence in Trikuta Nagar locality of Jammu on the intervening night of September 17 and 18, 2006, A case FIR number 107 of 2006 was registered at Police Station Trikuta Nagar.
