PDD goes ahead with traditional formula for load-shedding | Frequent Power Cuts | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 4: As the demand of power is increasing across the state with the onset of summer season, the Power Development Department (PDD) has preferred to go for its ‘traditional formula’ of enforcing long power-cuts, particularly in rural areas to bridge the demand-supply gap. The department, which has already been enforcing 6 to 8 hours power curtailments in rural areas and 3 to 4 hours in urban belts, has decided to impose additional curtailments of five to six hours to reduce the overloading on receiving stations. Most of the localities in the city are witnessing unscheduled power cuts since the Darbar moved to Kashmir. Interestingly the department officials say “there is no power shortage”, as the supply is affected due to overloading, which is a matter of bigger concern. As per the government record, state need 2500 Megawatt (MWs) of electricity, but the generation is just 1500 MW and the backlog is being imported from Northern Grid. Till date the total generation of electricity from the state's water resources has gone to over 2318 MWs, out of which 1560 MWs are in the central sector. It is pertinent to mention here that since 2004, the state government started a massive project to streamline the power sector in Jammu and Kashmir State, PDD had taken many steps to control the power losses and increase the revenue collection, but it has remain a failure. When contacted Chief engineer Shahnaz said that the department have cut power 8 hours in unmetered areas and some time temperatures is high than the department cut the power during 2 hours in the meters areas. She further said that otherwise we are not cut the power in the meters areas. However due to unscheduled power cuts the many people and organizations are daily holding protest against the apathy of the administration, bit nothing has been done so far to mitigate the problems of the people. Power connections are snapping at random, all over the city. The day temperatures have crossed 41 degree and residents have been bearing the brunt for the past days. Importantly, the power cuts this time are not because of any power shortage. The department officials said there was “no shortage at all”. A senior official of the department said “residents and industrialists have gone in for additional power appliances in their houses and industries without informing the department, particularly air-conditioners.
