All of them flirt with Kashmir
6/5/2011 10:12:47 PM
Over the years Kashmir has assumed the shape of a sensuous damsel attracting world leaders to flirt with her.In their bid to have their bases and areas of influence the US and China have been favouring a third-party mediation on Kashmir.Of late Washington has been saying that third country mediation was possible only after New Delhi's consent. But till date India has been opposed to it.Still the world powers have not given up their traditional art of flirting with Kashmir. In fact Kashmir has become a playground for international intrigues.During the last about 50 years politicians, diplomats and academicians from various countries have been visiting Kashmir as tourists. And on many occasions these very politicians and diplomats have been seen utilising their holidays in Kashmir for planting various ideas and suggesting various proposals to some Kashmiri politicians thereby encouraging them to keep on raking up the Kashmir issue. In fact these diplomats and
political leaders have been trying to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir.Whether these diplomats, visiting Kashmir from time to time, are from the USA,the UK and the European countries their main purpose is to motivate the Government of India and the state Government for accepting a third-party mediation on Kashmir. But the otherwise spineless Delhi has made it known to he world that it was not ready to opt for third-party mediation because the problem was bilateeral and needed to be resolved through t alks bet ween New Delhi and Islamabadd.
And during the last six months Kashmir seems to be on international focus again as the Ambassadors and envoys of more than 10 countries have visited the Valley. Since November last year, envoys from the countries including the UK, the United States of America, Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Tajikistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and European Union visited the Valley for various purposes including assessing the political situation and for exploring trade and tourism links.First the Canadian Embassy delegation met prominent separatist and mainstream leaders here in November last year. A month later, the Ambassador of Indonesia in New Delhi, Lt Gen (Retd) Andi M Ghalib during his four-day trip to Jammu and Kashmir explored the tourism and trade potential of the State. The US Ambassador to New Delhi Timothy J.Roemer also made a trip in March here for “listening to the people and connecting with the youth of state.”
In the month of May the the diplomats from the British High Commission in New Delhi vited Srinagar. In April, a two-member delegation from Australia led by the Australian High Commissioner to New Delhi, Brendan Hodgson assessed the latest political situation in the State. In the same month, the envoys of Saudi Arabia and Tajikistan participated in a religious conference here. Over a three weeks ago, the Foreign Minister of Iceland Ossur Skarphedinsson visited the Valley to explore the possibilities of geothermal energy in the State. Recently, the five member European Union delegation comprising Ambassador of European Union to India, Daniele Smadja, Ambassador of Ireland Kenneth Thompson, Ambassador of Belgium Pierre Vaesan, First Secretary EU Philipp Gross and Attache EU Anne Vaugier-Chatterge respectively is on the five day visit of State to assess the situation here
New Delhi deserves the credit for consistently opposing the demand for the third party mediation. This stand of Delhi seems to have disappointed separatists in Kashmir on the plea that the frequent visits of foreign diplomats and ambassadors had not helped the settlement of the Kashmir issue. These separatists, during their interaction, have been telling these foreign delegations about the need for international mediation.Repeated visits of these foreign diplomats seem to have encouraged the separatists in Kashmir to concoct tales about human rights violations. In case the foreign diplomats and envoys visit Kashmir for rest and relaxation they need not, then, waste their time on interacting with people having different shades of opinion and political leanings.New Delhi in general and the state Government in particular should try to discourage this free interaction between the diplomats from various foreign lands and the separatists.Such free
interaction is not possible in Pakist an and occupied Kashmir. Here lies the essence of Indian democracy that has t aken firm roots in the country.
