Panchayat elections to be followed by ULB elections: Dy CM

JAMMU, Jun 5: Highlighting the importance of Panchayati Raj Institutions in empowering people at grass root level, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand today said that it was the late visionary Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who by his futuristic approach brought 73rd and 74th amendments in constitution to pave way for decentralization of power to these basic units of democracy.
He said holding of Panchayat elections is a giant leap by the government to transfer power to the people and the same would go a long way in addressing the area specific problems of the people. Tara Chand was addressing a convention of newly elected Panches and Sarpanches of Marh and Satwari Block.
Tara Chand said the government is contemplating to transfer maximum powers to the elected representatives at the Panchayat levels and a high level committee is working on the model to equip these grass root level institutes with all required administrative powers, so that they can take the decisions at their own for the welfare of the people.
He said elections for Municipal Corporations, Committees and Urban Local Bodies would follow the Panchayat elections, thus fulfilling the commitment of the government to transfer power to the grass root level.
Former Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma, Former Minister, Gulchain Singh Charak, Ex-MLA, Balwan Singh, PCC Gen. Secretary, Vinod Sharma and PCC, Secretary Shamsher Singh, were among the prominent who participated in the function. Mangat Ram Sharma and G.S. Charak also addressed the convention.
