World environment day celebrated | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jun 5: World Environment Day was celebrated at Lawrence Public school by the students Eco Club along with a few senior citizens. Inspite of it being Sunday, students gathered and participated in celebrating the day. The program started with the lighting of the traditional lamp by the Chairman of the school, Wg. Cdr. M.M Joshi along with Shakuntla Joshi, Principal, & Baby Khushi the youngest students of the school followed by Earth song & recital of poems by some students in Hindi, Urdu & English. Theme for the program was 'Forests: Nature at Your Service'. Some members of the school Eco Club took the lead & discussed with their fellow students about the intrinsic link between quality of life and the health of forests and forest ecosystems. Later, secretary of the students Eco Club, Master. Akshay informed the gathering regarding its variety of activities ranging from cleaning up water bodies, tree-planting drives to community clean-ups, car-free days, photo competitions / exhibitions on forests, bird-watching trips, city parks clean-up initiatives & green petitions planned for current session 2011-12. Towards the end of the program a few senior citizens were honoured by the school management for their contributions towards the environment protection & preservation. Meanwhile, MIER College of Education also celebrated World Environment Day, the United Nations-designated day to increase worldwide awareness of environmental issues and to help motivate both individual and political actions. Dr. Renu Gupta, Director, MIER emphasized that this day is important as it stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances public action. Monika Bajaj, Head Environment Unit threw light on this year’s theme i.e. ‘Forests-Nature At Your Service’ and said that forests cover one third of the earth’s land mass, performing vital functions and services around the world which make our planet alive with possibilities. Dr. Surinder Kaur, Controller Examinations MIER College, Dr. Annie Koul, H.O.D. B. Ed, and all the staff members of the MIER College of Education were present on the occasion and appreciated the efforts of the students. They motivated the students and were of the opinion that these kinds of activities should be conducted as a routine. Meanwhile World Environment Day was observed today in the main hall of S.P. College Srinagar. While Prof. Saifuddin Soz MP (Fromer Union Minister) & President J&K Pradesh Congress Committee was the Chief Guest at the function, Mian Altaf Ahmad Minister of Forests and Environment presided over the function. Prof. Soz presented a ten point agenda to the learned audience for conversation and protection of Forests, water bodies and Heritage. He (Prof. Soz) stressed that the J&K Govt should prioritize the Water bodies for conversation and he cautioned that attention should not be distracted from Dal Conservation as it should be our first priority. Many people in audience participated in inter-active session. Mr. Saqib Qadri made a power point presentation on the achievements of people’s Ecological Council. Those who also spoke on this occasion included A.R. Wani Retd PCCF, M.Salim Beg Convener INTAC, Prof. Zaffar Rishi. Head of Department of Botany KU.
