Congress replicating 1975, murdering democracy | Action Against Baba Ramdev | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 5: In June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency to save her chair. She murdered democracy, imposed wartime restrictions on civil liberties, gagged the Press, unleashed a wave of senseless brutalities to silence and punish her critics and took recourse to undemocratic methods after the Allahabad High Court unseated her on the ground that she had indulged in malpractices to win election. At that time, movement against corruption was at its peak. Jaiprakash Narain was in the forefront. All the political parties, barring perhaps the CPI, were with the movement. Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi did all that they could to kill the people’s spirit. Their cruelties and barbarities dotted the country’s political scene for almost two years. There was anarchy. There was no rule of law. The people and their aspirations were dismissed with contempt. In 1977, however, the cruel, barbarous and corrupt government of Indira Gandhi ordered elections to the Lok Sabha. She had to do it. People were waiting for that opportunity and they availed of it. They participated in the general election in great numbers and avenged what Indira Gandhi and her son had done between 1975 and 1977. The result was the collapse of the Indira Gandhi-led illegal and corrupt-to-the core government and the rise to power of the newly-founded Janata Party. Morarji Desai became the Prime Minister. The country is now again witnessing a similar situation, notwithstanding the fact that the Manmohan Singh’s corrupt government has not declared a state of emergency. His government, like the Indira Gandhi government, has murdered democracy; imposed all sorts of restrictions on civil liberties, including the right to assemble and hold peaceful demonstrations; and ordered the police force to use violence to the extent possible against those opposing corruption. The case in point is the Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev’s crusade against corruption and his insistence that the black money stashed in foreign banks be brought back to India so that the same could be used for the development of the country and for socio-economic regeneration of the Indians and the brutal action against peaceful and unarmed followers of the Yoga Guru assembled at Ramlila Ground, Delhi. What was the crime of Baba Ramdev? He demanded black money back; he demanded stringent action against those who had stashed the Indian taxpayers’ money in the foreign banks, mostly in Switzerland; he demanded scrutiny of those who had been visiting foreign countries quite frequently for ulterior purposes; he demanded an ordinance; and so on. His method was peaceful and constitutional; his consistent counsel to his followers across the country was that they must remain peaceful and refrain from taking recourse to any kind of violence; his stand on the government, political parties and political actors was that he and his followers would not say anything against the government, against political parties and against political actors, that his movement would focused and the focus would primarily be on black money, and that he would welcome support whosoever extends it; his whole approach to the issue was transparent, rational, national, democratic and secular; and his declaration was that he would end his fast-unto-death only after the Union Government conceded his demands. What was the crime of his followers? The crime of his 90,000 followers, who had assembled at Ramlila Ground yesterday to join the anti-corruption crusade, was that they were more than peaceful; they were unarmed; they were chanting such slogans as Bharat Mata Ki Jai; they had tri-colours in their hands; they were respecting the sane counsel of Baba Ramdev that they would not create any kind of law and order problem; and they were singing patriotic songs. And, remember, those who gathered at the historic Ramlila Ground included Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, sants, faqirs, men, women, young boys, young girls, small kids and who not. They had come from different parts of the country to contribute to the anti-corruption crusade. This was their crime. What did the Manmohan Singh government did in response to the anti-corruption crusade? The government cancelled the permission for Baba Ramdev’s yoga camp at Ramlila ground and that, too, at 1.10 a.m. on Sunday (midnight); ill-treated and arrested Yoga Guru despite the fact that his followers and supporters formed a human chain around him; deployed five paramilitary companies to take action against the Baba and his follower and capture Ramlila Ground with the Yoga Guru seen appealing to his supporters to maintain peace and calm; Yoga Guru was physically removed from the Ramlila ground that left many injured and everything in a shambles; used excessive force against the peaceful protestors, including hundreds of women and children, and dispersed them; anti-riot police used heavy tear-gassing, imposed section 144 at the area; and the police tried to forcibly evict media persons covering the protest. All this happened in New Delhi the seat of the so-called democratic India. It must remain a matter of shame for the authorities. There is no doubt whatever that the brutal action against Baba Ramdev and his peaceful supporters would boomerang. In other words, they would decimate the Congress the moment they get an opportunity. The people will under no situation forgive the Congress and the Manmohan Singh-led highly corrupt government. |
