EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 5: “Tourists are guests and they need respect, love and affection from the common masses in Kashmir. A notion is being given that we are against tourism and arrival of tourists to Kashmir. This is not true, as we too want people to come over here and enjoy their stay. But at the same time, it is important that people living in various parts of India are made aware about the ground situation in Kashmir. The message which we have printed gives the real time account of the existing situation in Kashmir. The message is available in English, Urdu and Hindi. This message would be handed over to the tourists so that they come to know about the ground situation in Kashmir. It is my appeal to the people, especially youth not to cause any harm to the guests coming from different parts of the country or abroad. If we treat them well they can become our ambassadors and carry out our pain and sufferings to others at their respective places. We welcome tourists with open arms but appeal to them to feel our pain, become the ambassadors of our peaceful and just struggle in India. We appeal to them to tell our plight to others in India, tell the Indian masses that Kashmiris want freedom, fulfillment of promises made by the Indian leadership.” This was what pro-Pakistan and bigot Syed Ali Shah Geelani said the day before yesterday while interacting with media persons in Srinagar.
It is hardly necessary to reflect on all that he said, as most of his statements were mere reiterations of what he had been saying since years: Kashmiri pain, Kashmir problem, promises made by New Delhi; freedom, miseries of Kashmiri Muslims; reign of terror, political prisoners, chain of slavery, human problem, political problem, Indian occupation, human rights violations, and so on. However, it is necessary to reflect on what he expected the tourists to do across the country after concluding visit to Kashmir. The upshot of his whole argument was that the tourists should mobilize Indian public opinion in favour of so that Kashmir becomes independent or merges with Pakistan.
It is obvious that Geelani displayed ignorance about what the people across the country think about Kashmir. The people of India are fully aware of the situation in Kashmir. They are also aware of the nature of the problem the nation is facing in Kashmir. They know that problem in Kashmir is essentially communal. They also know that New Delhi has consistently bungled in Kashmir and has all along followed a weak-kneed policy towards the separatists in Kashmir. They term the New Delhi Kashmir policy as a policy of incremental surrender. They know everything and, hence, what is the way out?
What should be done to resolve the over 63-year-old Kashmir issue that has consumed thousands of our committed and dedicated soldiers, that has disturbed the religio-political equilibrium in Kashmir by forcibly evicting the Hindu minority from the Valley, that has caused enormous financial loss to India and that has harmed Jammu and Ladakh? Geelani has come to believe that tourists to Kashmir could help resolve the issue. It will not. But there is an alternative and the alternative is referendum in the country on Kashmir. Let the Government of India organize referendum in the country to know what the majority wants.
The Indian nation is the major stakeholder and it has every right to express its opinion on the issue. Since Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India politically, constitutionally and historically, referendum in the country alone could help resolve the issue on a permanent basis. Geelani and other Kashmiri leaders should come forward and tour the country to explain their point of view and the condition is that they would cheerfully accept the verdict of referendum. It’s no use beating about the bush. They have to be practical.
