Jammu, Nov 22
The Committee on Government Assurances has directed the PHE Department to initiate measures to ensure potable drinking water to people of Jammu and Kashmir especially in rural and far-flung areas. Drinking water is the basic amenity for common man and it becomes the d uty of the department to provide this facility to all.
The Assurance Committee that met here today with MLA Mr. M.Y.Tarigami in chair has reviewed the status of Government assurances made in the Floor of House from time to time in response to the queries of various Members.
The Committee expressed concern over the non-implementation of Assurances and viewed that all such assurances are related to the common man of the State and departments concerned should implement these with utmost care on priority basis. The Committee laid stress on durable and time-bound schemes so that the benefit of such water supply schemes reach to the needy segments. The officers of PHE department were directed to concentrate on the completion of on-going schemes on priority and all new schemes should be taken before ensuring the funds prior to their start so that these are completed in time-bound manner.
Ch. Gharu Ram, Member of the Committee raised the issue of testing the water of hand pumps installed in various localities and said that the department should take random checks of sample and ensure that people should get the safe drinking water. He stressed that people in rural areas should be encouraged to dig hand pumps and PHE department should provide technical assistance in this behalf.
The Committee has also directed the PHE department to provide a status report of all under-going schemes for the perusal of the Members within a fortnight.
Those present in the meeting include, legislators Mr. Mohammad Sayed Akhoon, Mr. Abdul Gaffar Sofi, Additional Secretary, Assembly Mr. Mohammad Ramzan, Superintending Engineer, PHE Mr. V.K.Puri and other officers of PHE department.
