Corps of Signals to upgrade communication network in J&K | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 6: Corps of Signals has framed plans for upgrading the communication system and network which will connect the far flung areas in Jammu and Kashmir to the corps headquarters in Srinagar, Udhampur, Nagrota, Baramullah. Defence Ministry sources said that various equipments, including OFC, cords, pipes, were being procured for grading and strengthening the communication network in the troubled state. Sources said that communication network in various areas needed repair and renovation because the system had been affected by heavy snow and rain during the winter months. For the troops, engaged in flushing out militants, durable, dependable communication network, according to the defence experts, was as important as weapons. Accordingly the Army authorities are on the move to introduce latest gadgets and systems for upgrading and updating the communication network. It has launched its own mobile communication system christened ‘Mercury blaze’. Sources said the mega project is being handled by the Corps of Signals, which is currently weighing the system in terms of reliability and security, among other parameters. Sources familiar with the project said the new system will replace the old wireless communication service used during counter-insurgency operations in the state. They said that the sophisticated technology would ensure faster mobility of troops during anti-terrorist operations. Besides helping provide the best secured communication to troops, the system would provide data communication directly to operational areas. The sources added that the system would enhance battlefield transparency, with troops being able to coordinate and carry out counter-insurgency operations in the best possible manner. The countdown to the launch has begun, with a series of mobile towers and other infrastructure already set up across army formations in the country, including Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri, Doda, Udhampur, Jammu, and Poonch districts. Sources said that the emphasis was being laid on strengthening the existing network besides introducing new techniques and gadgets for upgrading the system.(KIP)
