After 8 days of result, defeated candidates declared winner | ET-Poll Khol 2 candidates awarded wining certificates in Poonch Panchayat | | Amit Sharma EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, June 6: Believe it or not but two candidates contesting Panchayat elections for Sarpanch in one particular Panchayat of Rajouri district celebrated each others defeat a and victory between two days. A candidate who won elections of Sarpanch few days ago has been declared as defeated by the authorities while declaring defeated candidates as elected. Both the candidates have in their possession certificates of victory. As per sources, a defeated candidate Mohammad Ishaq in Kasba Panchayat was given certificate of victory by the election authorities after re-count. The same candidate was declared defeated by the same election authorities on May 29, 2011 by 15 votes. On that day, authorities declared Mohammad Hayat as wining candidate by 7 votes. However only after 8 days, he lost the election when the authorities recounted the votes. This is astonishing that winners are being declared defeated after one week and defeated ones are been declared as wining candidate. It also puts a question mark on the overall results of the Panchayat elections in the state. "If it can happen in Poonch, there might have been mistakes in whole of the state" sources said. On the other hand, a vote has also exceeded from the total votes polled on the day of polling in the area. As per sources, 1959 votes polled in the Panchayat but when the votes were re-counted, the number increased by 1 thus putting a question mark on the credibility of Panchayat elections. "These are not elections but drama", said the defeated candidate Mohammed Hayat while alleging that election authorities have come under the influence of some people who might have offered them gifts. "I still possess winning certificate and will not allow defeated one to sit on the chair. I am Sarpanch and will remain Sarpanch. I have been elected by people and no authority can remove me", he said. It is pertinent to mention here that Deputy Commissioner Poonch had ordered for re-counting after he received request from defeated candidate. However authorities are mute on the people who counted wrong votes on the first day of counting. "Why authorities are not taking people to task who were involved in giving wrong figures and terming a candidate elected or defeated without cross checking votes properly", sources said. |
