Rotational Chief Minister issue: Fotedar in Kashmir After Prakash, Taj says Congress stands by agreement | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 7.2011 With senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Makhan Lal Fotedar, arriving in Kashmir today, speculations are rife that he has been sent by the high command to assess the situation regarding rotational Chief Minister issue in Jammu and Kashmir. A section in state Congress has off late raised pitch for rotational Chief Minister after Omar Abdullah completes his three year term in office. Omar has been leading the coalition government since January 2009. The issue has been raised by State Congress president, Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz led faction on several occasions giving sleepless nights to coalition partner National Conference. National Conference leadership has been maintaining there is agreement with Congress that Omar will remain the Chief Minister for full six years. The member of Congress Working Committee and in charge of Congress in Jammu and Kashmir, Mohan Prakash, last week told KNS that his party stands by the agreement reached on term of Chief Minister issue in the state. “Whatever the agreement between the Congress and the National Conference is we stand by that,” he had said. However, sources told KNS that within the Congress party the chapter of a rotational Chief Minister may have been closed publicly but in private the Congress high command has kept the issue open. “Fotedar’s latest visit to Kashmir is an indication to it. He has been asked to assess the ground situation in the state and submit a report to Congress President, Sonia Gandhi,” a senior Congress leader told KNS. However, senior Congress leader and Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Taj Mohi-ud-Din rejected any idea of rotational Chief Minister. “We stand by agreement and there is no question of going back. Sonia (Gandhi) Ji’s word in Congress is a law and even if the agreement with NC is verbal it has been done by her,” Taj told KNS. On Fotedar’s visit to Kashmir, he said, “It is a seasonal trip and most of the people are coming here these days. He (Fotedar) visits Kashmir every year and there is nothing special in today’s visit.” Despite repeated attempts Fotedar couldn’t be contacted.
