Coalition lacks moral authority to speak on power sellout: Baig | Govt call to civil society farcical: Mehbooba | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, June 7 (KNS): Peoples Democratic Party Tuesday said by telling ‘a lie a day’ the coalition government cannot hope to mislead people on power sell out or other ‘disastrous compromises it has made at the cost of vital interests of the state.’ Addressing a meeting of party workers and newly elected panchs and sarpanchs at Sheeri Baramulla senior PDP leader and former deputy chief minister Muzaffar Hussein Baig said, “This government is compounding its crimes by treating people’s memory with contempt.” “They think all the people here are fools who have neither commonsense nor memory,” he said referring to the latest noises made by government about the loot of water and power resources. Beig said the present government has been carrying forward what all the NC governments have historically done to the state to make ‘us completely dependant on doles and forsake our pride and self respect.’ “NC betrayals and sell outs cannot be erased or changed by spin doctoring the facts on the sad story of J&K losing whatever it had by way of natural resources. First the rights over the rivers flowing through the state were signed away and then NHPC was handed over more than a dozen most feasible power projects,” Beig alleged. “As many as seven were given away even without the formality of a MOU to the NHPC by Dr Farooq Abdullah and three more by the present government,” he said and added, the present government has presided over the worst phase of state’s disempowerment in the shape of power projects, downgrading of J&K Bank and denial of freedom of peaceful protest. “They lack political credibility and moral authority to make noises on water and power and their best service could be if they desist from doing more damage to the interests of state,” Baig added. The former deputy chief minister said previous coalition started by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had set the state on course to regaining its political authority and economic self sufficiency. “In the six years of its rule the coalition between PDP and congress had set new standards of governance and an atmosphere of hope had been generated that had brought even India and Pakistan on the same page to recognise the realities of J&K and need for a political resolution. Places like Baramulla were set to become important stations on an international highway rather than remain squeezed into hopeless dead ends,” he said and regretted the present government had wasted all those gains. Referring to the calls to civil society by the present government to ‘play role in retrieval of state’s rights’ Mehbooba Mufti said nothing could be more farcical than that. “It continues to sell power projects to stay in power but has a grudge against civil society for not playing its role in getting them back” she said and reminded the government it was the same civil society which is being punished for raising its voice against atrocities. “Were not the 120 people killed last summer in struggle for justice, or the hundreds who still are in jails part of the same civil society that the government is now pleading with for help?” Mehbooba while greeting the newly elected panchs and sarpanchs said they were extension of a tradition of transparency, efficiency and public service that was established by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed during his brief three year tenure. “You are going into the field with a fund of goodwill and expectations that load you with great responsibility towards people” she reminded them. Congratulating the party cadre for a clean sweep in Baramulla constituency, Mehbooba said while the performance was outstanding it was not unexpected in view of the leadership provided by Muzaffar Hussein Baig had provided to them. “Baig sahib is the leader who has had a pivotal role in translating the vision of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed into the most appreciated and practical roadmap for J&K’s future and party’s ability to deliver on development and progress fronts,” she said and pointed out to the economic revitalization that Baig led as deputy chief minister in charge of planning and finance.
