PM, Congress out to outrage the nation | Attack On Baba Ramdev | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 7: It was hoped that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has no constituency of his own, and Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who is the de-facto Prime Minister, would tender an unconditional apology for the unpardonable sin their administration committed in the intervening night of June 4 and 5 by launching a sudden attack on Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev and his thousands of followers and supporters, including women and children. The hope had stemmed from the sharp reaction the police action evoked from the outraged nation. The nation in one voice had dismissed the Congress-led UPA Government as the "most corrupt government" and denounced it is the "most barbarous government." This strong reaction, coupled with countrywide massive protest demonstrations and marches, was the immediate fall-out of the brutalities the 5000-strong police force at the behest of the Manmohan Singh government perpetrated on peaceful unarmed and sleeping satyagrahis drawn from different parts of the country numbering almost 1,00,000 to evict the Baba and his followers. The nature of the reaction could be gauged from the equation of Home Minister P Chidambaram with General Dyer, who and whose Army had shot dead no less 380 peaceful unarmed persons, including women and children, at Jallianwalahbagh, Amritsar, on the Baisakhi day, April 13, 1919. The hope that the Prime Minister and the Congress president would tender an unconditional apology had also stemmed from the action the Supreme Court of India suo motu took by asking the Union Government and the Delhi Government to explain the circumstances under which Baba Ramdev and his supporters were evicted from the Ramlila Ground as well as the circumstances that made the administration unleash a reign of senseless brutalities against the Baba and his followers. The hope further stemmed from the very strong reaction the police action evoked from the leading members of the "civil society" and the media, both print and electronic, barring the committed, controlled and gagged monotonous, irritating and biased Door Darshan. It appears the countrywide protests and the strong reaction against the use of brutal force on peaceful satyagrahis all asking the government to bring back to India the black money stashed in foreign banks and action against the culprits have failed to move the Prime Minister and the Congress president. On the contrary, it appears, they have made up their mind to crush everyone who would dare to raise his/her finger against the UPA Government. That neither the Prime Minister nor the Congress president has been moved by the reaction from the outraged nation could be seen from what the Prime Minister and the Congress said yesterday. The Prime Minister termed the Ramlila incident as "unfortunate" but justified the brutalities saying there was "no alternative." As for the Congress, it also showed no remorse over the police brutalities. It has spewed venom not only on Baba Ramdev but also on Anna Hazare, another crusader and sophisticated member of "civil society." In fact, the Congress leaders and spokespersons, including Kapil Sibal, P K Bansal and Subodh Kanat Sahay (who had gone to the Delhi airport to receive and extend a very warm welcome to Baba Ramdev on June 1), former J&K Chief Minister and presently Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Janardhan Dwivedi (whom Sunil Kumar of Rajasthan tried to attack with a shoe at the party headquarters yesterday when he was addressing press conference and attacking the critics of the Congress and the UPA Government), Digvijay Singh (whose house at Bhopal was attacked by the angry people on June 5), Abhishek Manu Singhavi, Munish Tiwari, Rasid Alvi and who not have termed Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare as "mukhauta" of the RSS and accused the BJP of using Ramdev and Hazare to "create chaos and anarchy in the country." Each one of them has defended the brutalities and virtually threatened similar actions in the event of the people organizing protests against the government. All this shows that the Prime Minister and the Congress president are on the same page. It is this inhuman attitude of the Prime Minister and the Congress president that would not only destroy their government but would also destroy the Congress party. It is time for them to sit up, retrospect and work out a policy that not only ends the menace of corruption but also assuage the hurt feelings of the nation. But it is extremely doubtful that they would do so. |
