Buoyed over fight against corruption Jammu takes lead in calling successful bandh | | | Early Times REPORT Jammu, Jun 8 Is the support base of Baba Ram Dev or the prevailing heat wave conditions in plain areas of Jammu which resulted in near completion of successful Jammu bandh here today? Judging the responses of the common people to the call for Jammu bandh organsiers of the bandh are upbeat and happy that large number of people came out in their support and voluntarily downed their shutters but at the same time many people believed it is the prevailing heat wave conditions across plain areas in Jammu which forced the people to stay in doors and not the love for the Baba Ram Dev. Though the old city area in Jammu and pockets of BJP observed complete peaceful bandh the impact of the call was not so effective in parts of Jammu across the Tawi bridge and other housing colonies bordering Jammu city. The supporters of the Baba Ram Dev had organised protest dharnas and demonstrations but the presence of people standing in their support made it clear that the businessmen, opted to stay indoors and not resisted the bandh call due to prevailing heat conditions. There was no dearth of businessmen who were present outside their shops and wanted to open their shops but the majority of the group prevailed and convinced them against doing so. The reason why such a decision was taken across city markets in old city are was primarily heat wave conditions and not the support for Baba Ram dev. This reporter interacted with group of shopkeepers across the city and asked them the reason for closing their shops and they in unison shared their viewpoint by commenting that if the bandh call would have been given on a normal day they would not have downed their shutters. The businessman were categoric in saying we support the struggle of civil society against rampant corruption in the state but do not want to side with the political groups who want to take advantage of the emotional issues appealing aam admi. In some places the local shopkeepers quoted misconduct of the BJP MLAs during legislative council polls. A large number of protests and rallies were held in Jammu city and its outskirts with protestors demanding action against the corrupt elements and repatriation of black money lying in foreign banks. Shops and business establishments in Jammu, Udhampur and Samba districts remained closed with traders voluntarily keeping their shutters down. Though the transporters had not extended support to the bandh call, yet thin movement of vehicles was witnessed on roads. Lawyers, however, stayed away from the shutdown call and attended their courts across the Jammu. The government institutions also witnessed thin attendance. An impressive peaceful rally was taken out by the Patanjali Yog Samiti from Purani Mandi where scores of Baba Ramdev’s supporters were on hunger strike for the last five days. Chanting anti-UPA and anti-Congress slogans, protestors vowed that they would continue their agitation against black money and corruption. Similarly, hundreds of BJYM activists led by state president Munish Sharma took out a scooter rally against “atrocities” on Ramdev and his followers. The rally after passing through different markets of the city culminated at Kacchi Chawni Chowk, where a protest demonstration was held. “We extend our fullest support to Ramdev’s campaign against corruption. We appeal to the people of Jammu to come out in support of the bandh and show their solidarity towards the cause,” the BJYM state chief said. Jammu and Kashmir Panthers Party (JKNPP) headed by MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia burnt the effigy of UPA government and its ministers in the city to protest the police action on yoga guru. Similarly, the SRS activists led by Rajiv Mahajan sat on ‘Satyagarha’ at Canal to express solidarity with Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazzare for their fight against corruption. The activists of Jammu West Assembly Movement (JWAM), Bajrang Dal, BVS, Shiv Sena also staged noisy demonstrations in the city and burnt the effigies of Congress-led UPA government. Similar protests were also witnessed in Udhampur, Samba and Kathua districts. Meanwhile to support Baba Ramdev’s agitation and against the Delhi Police’s atrocities, activists of Bhartiya Vidharthi Sena ( a youth wing of Shiv Sena, Bala Sahib Thackeray) held protest demonstrations in the old city. Leading the protests, state president Vikrant Sharma lambasted the UPA government, Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for their silence on the issue of rising graph of corruption in the country. National Secular Forum (NSF) too showed their anger by protesting against the new Delhi action and in support of Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare’s satyagrah against Corruption, black money and Lokpal Bill. The agitated activists were led by NSF president Vikas Sharma. They shouted slogans against the Union Government and asked the Prime Minister to step down owning the responsibility. He said, "Baba was only demanding action against the corrupt people and declaring the black money lying in foreign banks as national party. But it pinched the UPA government because of that action was taken against the Baba and his followers in mid night injuring scores of people." Government's action is slap on the face of democracy and an example of worst sort of dictatorship which is totally unacceptable, he added. Kranti Dal (KD) today condemned that crackdown on peaceful protest of Swami Baba Ram Dev at Ram Lila Ground, New Delhi and termed the action inhuman. In a meeting held here today, KD State general secretary, Pritam Sharma said that the central govt is having the fear of the agitation by Anna Hazare and Baba Ram Dev and thus trying to malign the image of these social leaders to whom people are supporting. He alleged that Central Govt is heel bent to shield its tainted ministers due to which they are not keen to implement Lokpal bill or the bill to get the money back from the foreign banks. Sharma said that Kranti Dal will support every mass agitation which will be against corruption, black money and corrupt ministers or bureaucrats. Among others who were present in the meeting included were Jagdish Sudan, Vijay Kumar, Rajinder Bhagat, Rakesh Mehta, Akhil Gandotra, Varun Gupta, Vicky, Bunty, Kala, Bal Krishan and others.
