Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 8: Recently there has been a lot of interest in the high risk of Brain Tumours due to excessive usage of cell phones. In Medical history it has been seen that it takes years to prove or disprove any correlation based on hard facts and evidences.
It took years to prove relation between lifestyle, environmental correlations and diseases like History of smoking and lung cancer correlation was established over decades. Recently, the World Health Organization together with International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans, based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer, associated with wireless phone use.
In India till recent past the brain tumours were often not diagnosed in time but with recent advancements and better availability of CT and MRI centres in various part of country more and more cases are being diagnosed. The diagnosis of this disease is often met with depression and gloom from the families of these patients.
Understanding the need of the hour to create awareness and to provide related information (in addition to the Brain Tumour Support Group which is already active) Medanta is launching the Brain Tumour Helpline which will be answered by our neurosurgeon.
The Brain Tumour Helpline no. is 0124- 4855200
There is general agreement in medical literature that the attempt has to be to remove the brain tumors totally, or almost totally, within limits of preserving important brain functions like movements of limbs, speech, language and vision.
This requires a quantum leap in surgical technology that enables the neurosurgeon to peel away the entire tumor, while not damaging critical brain areas. Such a technology is being unveiled at Medanta Medicity in Gurgaon.
The advanced BrainSuite at Medanta, the 2nd such installation in Asia, helps the team to do just that. Dr. A N Jha, Chairman- Medanta Institute of Neurosciences, who is a pioneer in the MRI guided brain tumor surgery in the country, said “The surgical methods have themselves undergone a silent revolution. At Medanta, a team approach helps us neurosurgeons and oncologists working together to determine the best approach for a particular patient”.
To further increase the size of resection, a chemical dye is also being used called “ALA” which colours the tumour giving it a different colour, thereby making resection safer and easier.

For example, some patients may require microsurgery for removal of the tumor. Others may require an endoscopic approach, or a stereotactic biopsy. It is with this vision that Medanta Brain Tumor Centre was established under leadership of Dr AN Jha, Chairman; he says “the primary aim was to provide one stop solution for brain tumor management Medanta Institute of Neurosciences has an experienced multi-disciplinary team with skilled neurosurgeons who are known experts in all these approaches”.
