Doda cut off as cloudburst-triggered landslides affect 9 km road | stretch at Baggar; 3 feared dead, 6 odd LMVs buried under debrisSix hotels, 10 kiosks also damaged | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 08: In the worst natural calamity in Doda district in the past nearly a decade, cloudburst-triggered landslides played havoc at Ramgarh, Baggar, 15 km ahead of Batote on Doda road, this evening. At least three people were feared dead while some others were also said to have gone missing. Three hotels and 10 odd kiosks were razed to ground, three hotels were partially damaged and about six light motor vehicles were buried under the debris, SP, Doda, Mohammad Arif Rishu said. The incident occured at about 7.30 pm when due to a cloudburst, there was a sudden and highly concentrated downpour within a radius of few kilometres. The structures, that perished, could not withstand the mudslides and the gushing waters resulting from the cloudburst. There was no one inside the LMVs as these were parked by the roadside and their occupants were out either to attend call of nature, or have tea.The damaged structures included Hotel Greenland and Parihar teastall. Three of those who had gone missing were identified as dhaba owner Khalid alias Bablu, son of Mohammad Shafi of Baggar, Abdul Razak of Saraj and Mohan Lal, son of Devi Dass of Baggar. The SP, who spoke to Early Times from the spot, said though a total of 9 km road length had been badly affected due to mudslides, small stretches were completely washed away as a result of which Doda, Bhaderwah and Kishtwar were totally cut from the rest of the state. He said strenuous efforts were being made to take out the cars from the debris to make sure that there was no one in them. There was, however, no clue to the whereabouts of the missing persons, he informed. The rescue operation was in full swing when reports last came in after midnight. In February 2009 too, about 250 mt road stretch was broken at Assar, about 4 km ahead of Baggar, after a hillock had given way to incessant rains. A driver was killed in this incident. That time it had taken over one month to make an alternate road and over an year to repair the damaged stretch.Going by the pace of work at Assar, it was expected that it would take a lot of time to repair the damaged stretch of 9 km at Baggar.
