Army Chief reviews security situation in J&K
6/8/2011 11:59:21 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
srinagar, June 8: Army Chief General VK Singh on Wednesday arrived in Kashmir valley on a two-day visit amid intelligence reports suggesting presence of large number of militants at launching pads across the Line-of-Control (LoC).
Singh was received by General Officer Commanding of Srinagar-based 15 Corps Lt Gen SA Hasnain and General Officer Commanding Victor Force Major General Gurdeep Singh at Awantipora, 32 kms from Srinagar, a defence spokesman told .
He said the Army Chief, who is on a two-day visit to Kashmir, was briefed by Lt General Hasnain on various security related issues.
The Army Chief also interacted with senior officers of the Chinar Corps, the spokesman added.
The visit of the Army chief assumes significance as it came at a time when Army has warned of spurt in infiltration attempts as over 700 militants are reportedly waiting at the launching pads across the border to infiltrate into the valley.
Although Army has maintained that there was no successful infiltration attempt this year so far, State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in April disclosed that 40 militants had sneaked into the state.
"There is credible information to suggest that there have been successful attempts of infiltration in April. The figure has yet to verify by the multi-agency centre in Delhi. So as of now it is provisional but there is an indication that anything between 30-40 militants have crossed over and this information was independently provided both by the state intelligence agencies as well as central intelligence agencies," Omar told reporters on May 25 in Jammu.
