How can Jethmalani accuse Govt of muzzling the press? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 8: The Kashmir Committee chairman Ram Jethmalani severely criticized the National Conference led coalition government. He said this regime was reminiscent of the Nazi era. He also made a mention of the government machinations aimed at muzzling the press in the state. The NC responded by giving a para wise reply to the noted lawyer. However, the portion of Ram's statement concerning freedom of press was ignored. Senior leaders of the National Conference including its General Secretary, Sheikh Nazir and Ali Muhammad Sagar have repeatedly made clear that NC offered huge sacrifices for upholding the freedom of press in the state. History does not `falsify' their claims. In early 40s Sher-e-Kashmir beat a renowned journalist, Ghulam Ahmad Kashfi for not prefixing Quaid-e-Azam to Sher-e-Kashmir's name. It was by no standards an attack on the freedom of press. It was aimed at teaching the scribe a lesson. How could he not use Quaid-e-Azam for Sher-e-Kashmir? A few years later when the Sher-e-Kashmir became the emergency administrator of the state, Kashfi migrated to Pakistan administered Kashmir. Who says Sher-e-Kashmir exiled Prem Nath Bazaz and his deputy JN Sathu for writing against the NC government? They were `sent ' to Delhi ensure their protection! People must know that Bazaz survived a murderous attack. Ram Jethmalani must bear in mind that the government has not got intolerant to the Fourth Estate, three privilege notices against scribes during last year's budget session notwithstanding. A scribe had written against an `artist' who also happens to be an MLA. The notice was issued to promote `art' and to put an end to harassment of `artists'. Remember the Patron of National Conference is an artist as well. According to Chief Minister he is a better dancer than BJP's Sushma Swaraj! And who told Jethmalani that newspaper offices in Jammu were sealed? The authorities, in fact wanted the `tired' scribes to have some rest. The nocturnal raids on residences of editors! This is pure blasphemy. Men in uniform did enter the house of an editor last July but only `to enquire about the health' of the inmates. They also set the wardrobe of the esteemed editor right. An editor,as people know, does not have enough time to keep his clothes in order. The `caring' government sent some men in uniform to do it for the editor! So nice of them indeed. The police took some employees of the newspaper along. No, no they were not arrested. They enjoyed official hospitality for four days. People of Jammu know that no printing was sealed! After having offered huge sacrifices for freedom of press; how can they even think of sealing a printing press! A `misinformed' Jethmalani knows newspapers in Jammu do not survive on government advertisements. A newspaper also carried this slogan on its front page. The government has not stopped the advertisements. The newspapers do not need them! |
