EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, June 9 (KNS): To overcome the traffic problems in Srinagar, state government is constructing half a dozen flyovers in the City in the coming three years. The work on the proposed 260 crore projects is expected to start from September this year.
The 4-lane divided carriage way elevated road from Jehangir Chowk to Natipora Chowk will integrate with existing flyover with proposed express way at Jehangir Chowk for left turn from Dalgate to Rambagh. At Bakshi Stadium Chowk a left turn upward ramp from Jawahar Nagar to Rambagh and down ward ramp for traffic coming from Rambagh will be part of the express corridor.
At Jehangir Chowk a right turn elevated loop from Rambagh to Dalgate to join the existing elevated road is also proposed. Another upward ramp for traffic from Jehangir Chowk to Rambagh and a downward ramp for traffic from Rambagh to Jehangir Chowk is also proposed in the mega project aimed at decongesting and providing better road facility in the heart of the city.
The Chief Engineer Economic Reconstruction Agency, Khalid Muzafar told KNS that work on the projects would be completed within three years time. “Owners of commercial establishments and residential houses, who will be removed to pave way for the flyovers, will be rehabilitated. Already place for two shopping complexes near Jehangir Chowk and Rambagh has been identified. The work on Jehangir Chowk complex has already been allotted to JK Projects Construction Corporation.”
He said a committee has been setup to see how the shopkeepers who will be affected can be rehabilitated.
On airport road from Jehangir Chowk to Magarmal Bagh several government flats will be removed to pave way for the flyover. However, Muzafar clarified that Iqra Masjid near Sariaballa will not be touched.
Sources told KNS that Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has instructed the ERA authorities to start work on the flyovers soon. “Omar is interested that the work on the projects should be carried out without any delays and flyovers should be ready within the stipulated time,” they said.
