Sham inaugurates Garkhal Water Supply Scheme

JAMMU, JUNE 09 – Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture Mr. Sham Lal Sharma today inaugurated a Water Supply Scheme (WSS) Tube well at Garkhal, tehsil Akhnoor constructed at a cost of Rs 35.14 lakh under Border Area Development Programme (BADP).
The Minister said that with the commissioning of the Tube well adequate quantity of water has become available for meeting the drinking and irrigation water requirements of the area.
Mr. Sham said that Jammu and Kashmir has a rural economy and its growth was primarily dependent on the development of rural areas. He said agriculture, horticulture and other allied sectors are mainstay of state’s economy and there was a need to switch over to modern techniques to ensure better turn outs. . He stressed upon the agriculturists to adopt new techniques and switch over diversification of crops to get better dividends.
Highlighting the importance for having better irrigation facilities, the Minister called for better water management in the state and said it would pave the way for bringing about a green revolution in the state adding that only a collective resolve of the people and Government could lead towards the realization of the goal.
Mr. Sham directed the concerned Department to work with close co-ordination to provide irrigation and drinking water facilities to the people during the prevailing hot conditions particularly those farmers who have their lands on the tail end. He also directed for cleaning and de-silting of the output channel and other outlets under MGNREGA scheme.
Referring to the ongoing panchayat elections in the state, he said it was a land mark decision of the Government, the Minister said that the elected Sarpanches and Panches have now greater role in shaping the destiny of the people. He said that main objective of the government was to transfer the power to people of the state at grass root level and involve them in decision and policy making. He said establishment of Panchayats would have a great impact in implementing ambitious schemes and programmes transparently.
