Hailstorm lashes Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT srinagar, June 9: While as hailstorm lashed parts of Kashmir Valley, Doda-Batote highway remained cutoff Thursday after cloudburst swept away portion of the road last evening. Officials said that the hailstorm coupled with lightning and thunder lashed parts of the Kashmir valley including Srinagar this evening, disrupting normal life. The storm which continued for a few minutes forced people indoors even as there were no immediate reports about damage to houses or orchards. The hailstorm was followed by rains, bringing some respite from surging mercury in the Valley. Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, recorded a low of 15.4 degrees Celsius, one degree above the normal for this time of the year. The day temperature also hovered above normal, recording at 32.4 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, search and rescue operations in cloudburst affected Assar-Bagger area of Doda district in Jammu continued throughout today. Three persons- Khalid Hussein (29) son of Mohammad Shafi, Mohan Lal (23) son of Davdas and Abdul Razaq (33) son of Habib Ullah, are feared dead in the cloudburst that hit the Bagger area last night. Three hotels, ten Kohkhas (small road side shops) were also washed away in a Nallan due to cloud burst, heavy rains at Ramgar Baggar at around 20:20 hours in the evening. Three out of the six Light Motor Vehicles were still under the landmass that caved in following the heavy rains at Bagger. SP operation Mohan Lal said work to restore at least one-way traffic on the highway was underway. "Hopefully, we will be able to restore the traffic by tomorrow." Sources said that there was also a protest demonstration by the locals in the morning in demand for immediate grant of compensation. |
