6/9/2011 11:54:04 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 9: Even as the Panchayat elections were fought on the non-party basis, the outcome of the polls is fast becoming cause of one upmanship between the political parties. Notwithstanding the fact they are coalition, the race for wooing more and more elected people towards their end has surprisingly begun in the ranks of Congress and National Conference.
Sources said even though the coalition government had taken a decision to fight the Panchayat elections on non party basis for whatever considerations, it did not remain in the spirit as it should have been in that context as almost everywhere the parties and their leaders overtly or covertly supported and even campaigned for the candidates. However, in the aftermath of the polls when the results show affiliations and inclinations of the elected panches and sarpanches towards a particular party, the other parties are trying to woo and lure the workers and their representatives towards their fold.
Sources said the trend is predominantly being seen in parties which are otherwise alliance partners and as such supposed to follow the principle of coalition in not trying to break or woo the people from either of the two parties. Sources also said in Jammu region where Congress has been able to manage register 'visible' success and has certainly edge over its alliance partner National Conference, the latter is now trying to woo workers, supporters from Congress , apparently on the claims of the party being ruling rider in the coalition, which will pave way for 'smooth' benefits in terms of devolution of power and authority when finally the three tier system is place after the completion of the polls.
"This is what politics is all about………the efforts of wooing and luring people is something natural if done in a healthy manner but it that happens in negative sense by way of horse trading it will be seen in bad taste and may result in some bickering or friction at the higher ranks of two parties…", said a senior politician wishing anonymity. Sources however said that since Congress has been able to have edge over NC in many areas, Akhnoor constituency being one having created records of sort where Congress managed to have 46 Sarpanches by its side out of 51 panchayats, the NC leadershsip in that area in a bid of damage control is trying to woo the elected representatives and their supporters towards the NC fold.
The damage control and the game of one upmanship in trying to break and woo the workers towards respective party folds is also happening as a general practice in constituencies like Nagrota, Vijaypur in Jammu and even in districts like Doda, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar and some parts of Rajouri, sources said.
Sources also added that what has come as more signs of discomfiture for the rivals and alliance partner alike is the fact that Congress has gained considerably in
Kashmir valley and across the state as well, the reasons being different however in Jammu region and Kashmir region.
