BJP releases Rajnath Singh’s letters written to PM on Ladakh perspectives
6/10/2011 9:00:57 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, June 10: Bhartiya Janta Party chief spokesperson & national executive member Jitendra Singh released to the media three letters written by the senior BJP leader and party’s former national president Rajnath Singh to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The letters contain inferences and suggestions by Rajnath Singh after the conclusion of his Ladakh tour as the head of the BJP study group on Jammu and Kashmir.
The first letter, according to Jitendra Singh, makes a serious allegation that a high level committee appointed by Vajpayee-led NDA government had recommended in 1999 that government needs to develop an alternative safe road link from Ladakh via Zanskar valley to Manali and as a follow-up the NDA government had also sanctioned construction of the road but ever since the Manmohan Singh led UPA government has taken over, there has been no progress on this project.
This is a matter of serious concern, writes Rajnath Singh, because Ladakh is strategically a highly sensitive region and it is unfortunate that we are unable to provide a road link within the region at a time when neighboring countries like China are developing road links and even rail links in the border areas to gain access to the Line of Control.
The second letter, released by Jitendra Singh, dwells on Rajnath Singh’s observation about the Kargil region where nearly 20 public deputations come to meet the study group and their three common complaints were (i) lack of good road link between Kargil and Leh (ii) lack of airport facility with commercial air service and (iii) poor telephone network.
Rajnath Singh has urged the Prime Minister to attend to these issues on an urgent basis particularly because Kargil has a special place in India’s national history and this is the place where people from all communities including Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists live in perfect harmony and have from time to time set an example of their patriotic commitment which was visible even during the Kargil war of 1999 when they actively cooperated in the army operations.
In the third letter, according to Singh, the veteran BJP leader Rajnath Singh refers to alleged discrimination meted out to Ladakh region, for example, in distribution of relief fund in the aftermath of cloudburst on 06 August 2010.
Flash floods unleashed large scale destruction, reminded Singh, but the relief package of over 100 core rupees announced by the UPA government had not reached large sections of population in the region.
Similarly, Kargil district was totally ignored in relief and rehabilitation programmes. Meanwhile, the state unit of BJP hqrs also demanded a similar relief for the victims of yesterday’s cloudburst in the Baggar area of Doda.
Rajnath Singh has, according to Jitendra Singh, called on the PM, to personally intervene to address grievances of Ladakh region which has been feeling constantly neglected for the last over 60 years.

At the press conference, the issue of Amarnath Yatra controversy also come up to which Singh responded saying that to provide security to Amarnath pilgrims was not only the duty of administration but also the right of every pilgrim.
He said that no political party, be it BJP or Congress or NC, has the prerogative of interfering with the affairs of any religion .He warned that constant tampering with matters of faith to appease separatist sentiment ran the risk of erupting as a major confrontation with countrywide ramifications.
Singh further added that BJP was the only truly secular political party and it would expose the communal designs of pseudo-secular parties like Congress and NC whose agenda was always guided by considerations of religion and caste.
He also alleged that Congress as an alliance partner in the state owes to explain the coalition government’s tendency of appeasing one religious group at the cost of other and vice-versa.
