Strike cripples life in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jun 11: Life was today affected due to general strike called by breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC), demanding action against security forces for allegedly killing more than 110 persons during summer unrest last year.
Shops and business establishments in the summer capital, Srinagar, remained closed and traffic was off the roads. However, private vehicles could be seen plying on some routes.

A number of transport vehicles were also seen plying on Batwara and Dalgate routes.

A good number of roadside vendors had also put up their stalls in the civil lines and uptown areas.

However, work in government offices, banks and other semi government institutions was affected due to strike.

The private educational institutions had declared a holiday today, fearing trouble. However, the government schools also wore a deserted look as students stayed away.

A report from Anantnag said life was paralysed with shops and other business establishments remained closed and traffic off the roads. However, vehicles, carrying tourists were seen plying to different tourist resorts, including Pahalgam.

Work in government offices, banks and educational institutions was affected.

Life also remained affected in this and other north Kashmir towns and other tehsil headquarters, a report from Baramulla said.

It said shops and business establishments were shut and traffic was off the roads. However, private vehicles, including two wheelers were seen plying on different routes.

Similar reports were also received from other parts of the Kashmir Valley.

The HC had called for a general strike today to offer fateha to all those who were killed during last years summer unrest.

A spokesman of the Hurriyat said amalgam Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was also to visit Eidgah to offer fateha and also demand action against the security forces allegedly involved in these killings last year and for the release of all political prisoners.
