IFS probationers participate in ‘tree talk’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, June 11 (KNS): The 32nd series of popular environemtn awareness programme ‘Tree Talk’ was held in the tourist hill resort of Patnitop where 38 Indian Forest Service probationers of Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy Dehradun were the special guest participants. In addition 45 participants of Youth Hostels Association of India J&K Branch also participated in the Jungle walk. While welcoming IFS probationers and YHAI volunteers, ‘Tree Talk’ champion, O P Sharma highlighted the scientific finding saying that trees talk to each other through W- waves as per latest findings. “Physicist Ed Wagner has found evidence of tree communication in nature. When a tree is chopped, adjacent trees put an electrical impulse and communicate approaching danger. Trees come to know what is happening and produce alarm which is exhibited in the form of W-waves,” he said. Chief Conservator Forests Jammu, S C Sharma, while addressing the participants highlighted the importance of watershed management for the regulation of water-flow in the rivers which act as lifelines for sustenance of the economy. “No hydroelectric project can be viable unless we manage watersheds in the mountains. Forests and economy are intricately interconnected and future prosperity depends on sustainable use of bio-resources. J&K State is a biomass state where many nomadic communities and local villagers derive their day to day utilities from the forest resources. Climate change and glacial retreat have to be viewed in the context of forest cover and phasing out of greenhouse gases,” he said. ‘Tree Talk’ and Nature Walk which started from Patnitop culminated at Sanasar and IFS probationers had a firsthand feel of forest inter-relationships as detailed by tree talk experts and naturalists accompanying the participants.
