National Highway reopens at Ramban | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, jUNE 11: Traffic resumed today on busiest Jammu-Srinagar National Highway after the Jammu and Kashmir Government handed over an ex-gratia to the family of a 12-year old, who was killed by a leopard in Batote area of mountainous Ramban district. Hundreds of people from village Damsaali assembled on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway at Batote in protest against the Wildlife Department this morning. The protest started last evening when a 12-year-old boy identified as Liaqat Ali, son of Ghulam Ali was attacked and eaten by the wild beast from the nearby forest in village Damsaali. The mob also attacked the office of the District Forest Officer, Batote alleging carelessness on part of the department. Deputy Commissioner Ramban Shabir Ahmed along with Warden Wildlife Department this morning rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the situation. "The officials handed over a cheque of Rs 1.10 lakh to the family of the victim as a relief," a police official here told He said the protestors dispersed later after an ex-gratia was handed over to them following which the halted traffic resumed on the national highway. |
