Purpose behind Jethmalani's ranting against Omar led Govt | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 11: When the revived Kashmir Committee Chief, Ram Jethmalani, an eminent lawyer and a BJP member in the Rajya Sabha termed the Omar Abdullah led Government as vicious as that of the erstwhile Nazi regime he (Jethmalani) was airing such strong notions with a purpose. He does not seem to have lost his balance and senses as alleged by the National Conference leadership. When we trace political developments since the time New Delhi started attempts at cutting the ice in Kashmir one finds that the separatists had reservation in meeting negotiators and interlocutors appointed by the Government of India. Moderates in the camp of separatists refused to meet K.C. Pant and N.N. Vohra on the ground that they were simply bureaucrats. They refused to have any interaction with the three interlocutors on the ground that their's was not a decision making body. In fact they were keen to get the talks with them resumed either with a meeting with the Prime Minister or a team of central ministers deputed by the Prime Minister. But these separatists, including the hardliners, had never any hesitation in meeting the Kashmir Committee members, led by Jethmalani, when they reached Srinagar during the first week of the current month. The separatists welcomed interacting with Ram Jethmalani and his previous team members. During his five-day stay in Srinagar Jethmalani's statement that Gen. Pervez Musharraf's four-point proposal on Kashmir, if it had been implemented, could have settled the Kashmir issue further endeared him to the separatists. Jethmalani's statement that the atrocities committed by the government in Kashmir were "unheard [of even] in the Nazi ruled in Germany," had received appreciation from various quarters in the Kashmir valley. Even the separatists had felt elated because they thought that their stand on human rights violations by the Government and its agencies had been vindicated and endorsed by not only an eminent criminal lawyer but a senior member of the BJP. Whether Jethmalani's statement caused any embarrassment to the BJP leadership in Delhi may not be as important as it further brought Jethmalani closer to the separatists. As was expected the National Conference leaders have started ranting against Jethmalani and many among them want the Government to disallow him from visiting Kashmir as had been done in case of human rights activist Gautam Navlakha. However,Jethmalani has endeared himself to the separatists and won their confidence to such an extent as New Delhi can use him as a successful negotiator between the Government and the separatists. The three interlocuters, Dileep Padgaonkar, M.M. Ansari and Radha Kumar, have failed to interact with the separatists with the result they may not be able to act as a wedge between the Government of India and the separatists. This vacuum can be filled by Ram Jethmalani who can be trusted by the separatists. Hence if Jethmalani berated the National Conference led Government he did it simply to gain confidence of the separatists. One may not rule out the possibility of Jethmalani getting a chance to play a key role in settling the Kashmir issue and in removing the trust deficit between New Delhi and Islamabad. It can be possible if the Government of India does not treat Jethmalani as a BJP leader but as chief of the Kashmir committee. |
