FIR against Nayeema evokes severe reaction
`It gives fascist mindset of authorities'

Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 11: A few days after Kashmir Committee chairman, Ram Jethmalani accused National Conference led coalition government of muzzling the press in Kashmir; the police registered an FIR against noted journalist and broadcaster, Nayeema Ahmad Mehjoor. She has been accused of `inciting violence' through the social networking website Face book.
The police action has evoked severe reaction in the Valley. Renowned human rights defender Advocate Parvez Imroz said the action was unwarranted and uncalled for. "It reflects the fascist mindset of the authorities. In the garb of upholding peace, the government has crossed all limits. They are banning people from entering Kashmir, they are curbing the freedom of right to speech and expression by booking scribes in criminal cases and they miss no opportunity to manhandle the journalists", he said.
Senior Advocate Siraj-ud-Din Shah said the case against Nayeema speaks volumes about the fragility of Kashmir situation. "If situation has really taken a favourable turn, then people should not be harassed like this", he said.
A senior journalist preferring anonymity expressed shock over the police action. "There is no scope for such machinations in a democratic set up", he said. "Unless the fourth estate functions freely, democracy cannot flourish", he added.
Nayeema incidentally is not the only journalist to be booked in a criminal case for `inciting violence'. Last year Suhail Bukhari of News X and his colleague booked in a similar case. In addition, the government banned all private news channels for similar reasons last year. The ban still continues.
The Face book users have been giving tough times to the authorities since last year. A few users were arrested as well. However, they were set free after preliminary investigation. Early this year the corps Commander also expressed concern over `reckless use' of the Face book by Kashmiri youth. "They are maligning the image of the security forces", he said while addressing a function in South Kashmir. Other security agencies including the intelligence sleuths have also resented use of the website by Kashmiri youth.
