Shrine Board and not government responsible for fixing yatra duration | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 12: Commenting on the VHP statement in which the party blamed the state authorities for preventing pilgrims from starting the annual Amarnath yatra from June 15 senior Government functionaries said that the NC led ruling coalition had nothing to do with fixing the duration of the yatra. These functionaries said that the schedule for the annual yatra period or duration was being set by the Amarnath Shrine Board which is headed by Governor N N Vohra. One senior Government officer said , “If there is any dispute over the yatra duration it is between the Shrine Board and the VHP besides Baba Amarnath Yatri Niyas.” He said that the Government has no hand in fixing the period of the yatra and past practices show that the Government simply provides various facilities to the pilgrims, including the much needed security cover during the yatra period fixed by the Shrine Board. The Shrine Board makes arrangements for the yatra, fixes the calender for it, issues permission to various NGOs and philanthropists for setting up langars from Kathua to the holy cave. It is on the basis of the recommendations of the Shrine Board that the state Government makes series of arrangements for the pilgrims who include snow clearance operations on Pahalgam-cave route and upgrading it besides setting up tented accommodation for them. It is the duty of the Government to set up medical camps. A couple of senior Congress leaders said, “We too wish for a longer yatra period but fixing a yatra schedule and period is in the hands of the shrine Board and not in our hands.” They explained that after the formation of the Shrine Board in 1987 the entire responsibility for making arrangements at the holy shrine for prayers, fixing of the yatra period and snow clearance operations on Baltal-cave route in the hands of the Shrine Board. The Congress leaders said, “It was totally wrong to blame the Congress leaders for remaining mum over the confrontation between the Government and the VHP."They said that those who have been favoring longer yare period need to discuss with the members of the Shrine Board. One senior congress leader wanted the Government not to stop yatris if they wish to start the yatra from June 14. He said, “Let the yatris be given some security cover and they should be asked to giving in writing that they were travelling to the holy cave on their own risk and responsibility.”(KIP) |
