Rahul digging Congress’ grave in Jammu | No Rotational CM | | MINCING NO WORDS NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 12: NC leader and chief minister Omar Abdullah declared on Friday that “he will remain chief minister for full six years and that no Congress leader is replacing him after January 2012.” He described as “untrue the reports in media regarding rotational chief minister in the present National Conference –Congress government.” “10-Janpath (official residence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi) has not given any indication regarding chief minister on rotational basis. I will be the CM for six years as per the agreement between National Conference and Congress. Do not believe them (read Congress leader and former deputy Chief minister Mangat Ram Sharma). If such statements come from 10 Janpath then only they matter. Some interested parties are trying to rake up this issue. This chapter had been closed in January 2009 only when I took over.” What Omar Abdullah said just could not be construed as a snub to the Sharma and some other Jammu-based Congress leaders. It could also be construed as severe criticism of JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz and in-charge of J&K Congress Mohan Prakash. While Soz has on a number of occasions stated that the issue of rotational chief minister-ship is still wide open, Mohan Prakash has not overruled the possibility of such an arrangement of power-sharing. Only the other day, he stated in Kashmir that the Congress was committed to respecting the agreement reached between the NC and the Congress high command (read Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.) At the same time, however, he did not disclose what the agreement was. Actually, there is nothing in writing. Nor is there any statement from the Congress high command to this effect. In 2005, Congress high command, Sonia Gandhi, had declared that the PDP would rule the state for the first three years and the Congress during the remaining term of three years. She had also stated that she “sacrificed the chief minister’s office in the larger national interest.” It appears there is a secret understanding between the NC and the Congress high command, which cannot move an inch without the concurrence of another member of the high command, Rahul Gandhi. It needs to be noted that Rahul Gandhi is a great fan of Omar Abdullah. It became clear in 2010, when he overruled those in the UPA Government and the Congress who were toying with the idea of showing Omar Abdullah the door in the wake of 2010 summer unrest in Kashmir or in the wake of the rise of stone-throwers in the Valley and ordered that Omar Abdullah must be given “more time.” His order clicked and Omar Abdullah’s secured his position. The crux of the matter is that Rahul Gandhi is there and he would not allow the replacement of Omar Abdullah with some Congress leader as chief minister. Besides, Omar Abdullah’s brother-in-law Sachin Pilot, who is also a minister in the union council of ministers, is also there to defeat those who are for rotational chief minister-ship. Also, don’t forget that Omar Abdullah’s father and the NC president Farooq Abdullah is there in union council of ministers as well. He will never ever allow anyone in New Delhi to compromise the NC’s interests. All in all, the situation is favourable for Omar Abdullah and the NC. In other words, it is the J&K Congress, which has already become thoroughly unpopular because of its truck with the NC, as also because of its utter failure to cater to the needs of its constituency in the state in general and Jammu province in particular, that will have to pay a very heavy price. The fact is that the J&K Congress is on the verge of ruins/collapse. Indira Gandhi started the process in 1975 and Rahul Gandhi would complete the process of the Congress’ demise in the state. Rahul Gandhi is digging the Congress’ grave in the state. There should be no doubt it. It is for the Congressmen in the state to assert in their own interest and in the interest of the state. The Congressmen in Telangana have shown them the path and they need to tread it.
