Kashmiriyat compassionate and Dogriyat… | What An Irony | | STARK REALITY RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 12: What is Dogriyat? There is nothing in the political literature that defines Dogriyat. Yes, part of the Dogri literature does talk very high of Dogriyat. It makes us believe that the Dogras are very sweet people. All the Dogra writers hail Dogri and a noted Dogra poet describes them as “khand mithe lok Dogre.” The Dogra poets and writers also describe them as “simple, large-hearted, all accommodating, hardworking and nationalists to the core.” As for those who matter in the political field, media, think-tanks, trouble-shooters and commentators, they find nothing among the Dogras that could be hailed, appreciated and promoted. In fact, there are elements, and they are innumerable, who do not appreciate the Dogras and Dogriyat. The reasons: The “Dogras always accuse Kashmir and New Delhi of giving a preferential treatment to Kashmir and Kashmiriyat”; “the Dogras consistently charge the ardent supporters of Kashmiriyat in Kashmir with adopting discriminatory policies towards them and looting, fleecing and exploiting them socially, politically and economically”; “the Dogras do not support the ardent champions of Kashmiriyat like Geelani, Mirwaiz and others of their ilk who have been demanding separation from India or those demanding autonomy and self-rule” (read semi-independence); and “the Dogras demand trifurcation/reorganization of the state/federalization of the state polity.” But these are only some of the reasons which make the ardent believers in the concept of Kashmiriyat adopt a negative attitude towards Dogriyat. Some of them even describe the Dogriyat as parochial, narrow-minded, backward-looking, anti-Kashmiriyat, intolerant and even anti-national. They curse Dogriyat when the ignored and discriminated Dogras demand separation from Kashmir. They also assert that the assertion of Dogriyat has all the potential of alienating Kashmiriyat, and even forcing it to look towards Pakistan. The fact of the matter is that the believers in and supporters of Kashmiriyat not only hold New Delhi responsible for the alienation of Kashmiriyat but they also hold the Dogriyat responsible for the troubles in Kashmir. The upshot of their whole argument is that those who are demanding empowerment, recognition and promotion of Dogriyat are “communal” and “regionalist.” And, they express these views conveniently overlooking the fact that the Dogriyat has cheerfully accommodated refugees of all varieties. The Dogriyat welcomed and accommodated refugees from West Pakistan in 1947. The Dogriyat welcomed and accommodated refugees from Pakistan-occupied-Jammu & Kashmir in 1947-1948. The Dogriyat welcomed and accommodated over three lakh Kashmiri Hindus in 1990. The Dogriyat has been even accommodating the believers in the concept of Kashmiriyat. The fact of the matter is that the Dogriyat has been consistently sharing the grief of these refugees – over 1.5 million and all victims of the votaries of two-nation/three-nation – since decades overlooking threat to its very existence and yet this stark reality has not inspired anyone to hail the Dogriyat. Is it not an irony? It is. How unfortunate is Dogriyat that it is not considered fit even for obtaining Dogra certificate? There is no need to conclude this story with the moral of this story, as everything is clear. (Concluded)
