SRINAGAR, June 12: Police on Sunday retrieved bodies of two youth, while efforts were on to trace three remaining youth who had drowned after their cars rolled into Lidder nallah in Pahalgam tourist resort in Anantnag district last night.
“The dead bodies of Yasir Farooq Son of Farooq Ahmed of Khankah Mohalla and Mudasir Ahmed Shah son of Abdul Rasheed Shah of Habak, Srinagar were recovered almost three kilometers downstream. Efforts are on to trace other missing youth,” Head Disaster Management Cell, Aamir Ali said.
The accident occurred last evening when two cars Ford Fiesta (DL4CF-0935) and Maruti (JKO1G-4477) carrying at least six youth skidded off the road near Nunwan due to heavy rain and poor visibility while on way from Srinagar to Pahalgam. Both the vehicles got trapped in the turbulent Lidder Nalla and due to heavy rainfall they got washed away.
One youth identified as Sajad Ahmad Lankar of KhanKahi Moulla, he said was rescued after 12 hours from the river while his associate, Yasir was washed away by the fast flowing water. “The rescued youth was rushed immediately to the hospital. His condition is stable,” Ali added.
Till reports were last received the rescuers were still searching for the bodies of Shoukat Ahmed Aram Son of Ghulam Rasool Aram of Aali Kadal and two other unidentified persons. He said that soon after the incident, rescue operations were started to trace the missing youth. Police also recovered one car from the accident spot, while another is believed to have been washed away.
“We have recovered number plate of the Maruti car and some more tools. Police, CRPF and fire service personnel besides river rafters have been pressed into service in the rescue operation,” he said. He said that four people were believed to be in the Maruti car when it fell in the stream.
Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended in KhanKahi Moulla, when the body of the slain youth was brought to his home this afternoon. Amid tears and sobs, hundreds of people participated in the funeral prayers of Yasir. He was later laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard.
