When this scribe met Sanju at Pacca Danga PS in 1997, he looked calm, composed and vindictive | His journey from video shop to J&K's most wanted criminal | | BHARAT BHUSHAN
JAMMU, June 12: Even in the Akhnoor streets, which had been his hangout once, people avoid discussing Sanju in public nowadays. It is not because of the hatred for him but they hold the view that they could land in trouble if they do so. They feel that the strangers, who seek information about him, could possibly turn out to be cops in mufti, or some gangsters. Wanted in the brutal murders of three Chopra family members, their driver and a servant in the posh Trikuta Nagar, he ran a small video shop in Akhnoor town and was little known then. But as time passed by, he attained notoriety for not letting his rivals get him down. His revengeful and unforgiving behaviour gradually moulded him into a man who now was the state's most wanted criminal in police records. In 1991, he shot at and wounded Tony Gupta of Akhnoor for allegedly showering abuses on him. Tony later died in a road mishap and, with this, his ememity with him ended. Around 1995, he allegedly shot dead top criminal Jagdev Singh alias Jeban of Dumi Malpur in full public view in Akhnoor town. A small piece of land close to Sanju's video shop was said to be the bone of contention between them. While some local businessmen wanted to occupy it, Sanju did not let them do so. It is alleged that the same group of businessmen had invited Jeban to Akhnoor to intimidate him. Jeban was a terror to the area and no one could ever think of saying no to his diktats. Whenever he moved out, he was escorted by armed bodyguards.Sources in Akhnoor police said after a meeting with the businessmen, Jeban allegedly manhandled Sanju at his video shop. Minutes later, Sanju was alleged to have shot him dead in the town. Some allege that he had done so at the instance of Jeban's rivals in Jammu. He was arrested few months after the incident and put in the jail. Two years later, ie on November 7, 1997, his name figured as main accused in the killing of underworld don Sikandar Arora alias Billoo inside the central jail (now district jail) at Ambphalla here. Reason cited by police: Due to some rivalry, Billoo had allegedly conspired to eliminate him. However, before he could execute his plan, Sanju struck. Billoo was in the jail in a murder case. From these two vindictive killings, he allegedly turned into a "professional" killer, claimed police which were now hounding him for his alleged involvement in the murder of multi-millionaire R B Chopra, his wife Madhu, daughter Saloni, driver Jagan and servant Sonu in September 2006. Billoo was eliminated on the bhaiya-dhooj day near the third jail gate when he was going to meet his sister who waited for him in the jail's 'waiting hall' to apply tilak on his forehead and pray for his long life. He, however, could never cover the short distance between his barrack and the waiting room and was murdered. This scribe had covered the spot inside the jail and also visited the Pacca Danga police station where Sanju was lodged. Inspector Mushtaq Goni was the SHO. While he gave details of the incident, cops brought a handcuffed youth before him."You can speak to him. He is Sanjay Sharma alias Sanju, the main accused in the Billoo murder case," the SHO said. Around 6 ft in height, he had a lean atheletic body. There were blood stains on his bearded face and he had a wound on forehead. He looked calm and showed no repentance for the "wrongdoing". During the short conversation with him, this scribe found him unrepenting and a hard nut to crack. He answered all the queries coolly.Later, while being again taken to the police station lockup, he held his head high. A police officer at the police station had then remarked, "He has done police job easier." After some time, he was again jailed but had later jumped parole and gone underground. Till today, SIT had not been able to get any lue to his whereabouts.
