Wakf amendment bill on cards: Soz

SRINAGAR, Jun 13: Select committee of Rajya Sabha on “Wakf Amendment Bill 2011” headed by Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz discussed various issues with regard to functioning of J&K Wakf Board and sought suggestions from the Wakf Board members at a meeting held here today.
Giving resume of the functioning of State Wakf Board, Commissioner/Secretary, Revenue informed the meeting through power point presentation said, that Wakf Board looks after 93 Shrines, 109 land properties and 28 buildings. He said that 2150 kanal of land, orchards spreading 1750 kanals and 250 kanals of paddy lands are being handled by the State Wakf Board.
Aijaz Iqbal further said that 88 Darsgahs are being run by the board where Islamic Education is also being imparted to the students. In addition, 1700 deserving families are being provided financial assistance besides four ambulance services are also kept at the disposal of the needy. He said Wakf Board also provide employment to 1121 persons and advances Rs. 2 crore as financial assistance to the Islamic University of Science and Technology Awanitpora.
One Nursing college under the name of Bibi Haleema Nursing College has been set up for imparting nursing training to 203 female students. Regarding expansion work of Dastgeer Sahib Shrine and beautification of Chrar-i-Sharief premises, the meeting was informed that work has been taken in hand and would be completed soon.
Meeting was informed that comprehensive plan for Jamia Masjid Jammu costing Rs. 17 crore has been formulated adding that Hajj House has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 4 crore. The meeting was further informed that Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University has been established at a cost of Rs. 30 crore and another Rs. 4 crore have been incurred on various work so far.
Later, the select committee after the meeting also interacted with media persons. Professor Saif-ud-Din Soz said that purpose of Wakf Amendment Bill 2011 is to ensure protection and proper utilization of Wakf property. He said that so far 100 persons have participated in the interaction process with the select committee and said selection committee also sought suggestions from J&K Wakf Board members in this connection.
